12 die in hooch tragedy near Chennai







HENNAI: In a major hooch tragedy, at least 12 people, including two vendors, died after consuming an illicit brew at suburban Menambedu village, police said Saturday.

The victims, attending a marriage function, took ill Friday after consuming the brew mixed with rectified spirit. While four persons died on Friday night, eight persons died Saturday.

At least two persons were battling for life at the government general hospital here, police said.

Bodies of six victims were now in government general hospital and another six had been kept in the government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital. While some of them died at their houses, others died after being admitted to hospitals, Deputy Inspector General of police K Rajendran said.

One person had been detained in connection with the supply of the illicit brew, he said.

Earlier, in the state Assembly, Revenue Minister O Paneerselvam, replying to points of order raised by some members on the tragedy, said in all 14 persons took ill of whom nine had died.

Two of the deceased were the sellers of the brew and had a history of prohibition offences, the minister said.

Special police teams had been sent to Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring districts to find out the source of the killer brew, he said adding an investigation by the police was on.

Genteel bongs of the present generation have neither the stomach, patience nor the adventurousness of their grandfathers. In addition to goat`s head, other common items of consumption (not so common today) used to be turtles, eels, snails and rabbits. You would have heard of the Hilsa.... do you know that the oil obtained from its fat is a great delicacy and eaten with rice?

Entirely true. Only in bongland will you find entire goat heads for sale at the butchers (unlike elsewhere where only the bheja is sold). It is interesting to note that this used to be very popular among brahmins as opposed to usual meat eaters like muslims or the lower castes.

And yes, the entire head sans the skin. From what I have heard, it is cracked before cooking for easier access :) As I`ve mentioned earlier, few of the genteel educated types have the stomach for this nowadays. Or a kadhai of that size for that matter.

You will have a new rebholushion on hand if you deprive any self respecting Bengali from booze and cigarettes.

In fact, as food min you will have to issue ration cards for subsidised grog or else there will be hartals and bandhs all round.

Btw, did you know that there are licensed govt shops which sell opium, charas, ganja etc. to ration card holders. I have seen a few in Calcutta but not anywhere else. Anyone has more information?

Is this true? How complete is the goat`s head (e.g. without skin I assume, but how about teeth, eyeballs, tongue?)? Is it a regional thing (I have been to central and north Bangladesh and never saw anything like this in those parts)?
