a very famous marlboro campaign reads: "Its true that 40,000 peopel dide last year due to smoking, but 4 million are doing just fine."
Smokign isn't a healthy activity, i agree. But i guess there's worse things in this world than smoking and we hardly pay any attention to those. Think about it.

I quote from the article :
``Smoking, by the way, is not physically addictive at all. Its addiction is about as strong as that of tea or cola. This Psychological addiction can be cured without having to resort to extreme measures; ever cured yourself of chewing too much gum? That`s how hard is quitting smoking for a normal individual with normal willpower. Contrary to popular opinion, you are not likely to suffer body pains, daylight hullucinations, and consequently a tragic death during quitting period. ``
A little research will tell you that cigarette smoking is in fact more addictive than charas. Nicotine withdrawal symptoms are both physical and mental, and can be very severe depending on how much an individual smokes. Chest pains, irregular heart beats, mood swings, and disruption of normal hormonal activity and fat/protein storage in the body are common. No wonder why it is so difficult to quit. Of course it varies from person to person.
Nevertheless, smoking is probably the worst thing you can do to yourself. Quitting takes time and effort, but it is worth it.

Madiha,
seconding what you have written above, i would like to add that being a smoker and now a non-smoker, i have seen both sides of the coin. what made me quit was none of the harmfull effects of smoking, but a simple statement made by a friend, `sitting next to a woman who smokes is like hugging an ash-tray!`

If I am incoherent have someone past the age of twelve nearby to help you out with those tricky sentences.
New as I am here...I always wonder how many screennames people use here. Maybe Chowk is run by this one crazy tranny with Multilple Personality Syndrome who besides me, a couple of other posters is the only one here. What was that Tom Wait`s quote? Oh yeah.
``There ain`t no devil, there`s just god when he`s drunk.``
And I am not a Godless heathen in case the presumptuous scum are reading this.
Passive smoking solution. Use guns when politeness or antismoking signs fail to work.
A dead inconsiderate smoker with his brains splattered over the steak will send a message. Do not f*ck our lungs suicidal scum.
Anger and disgust? I don`t know really but speaking from writing in both moods and reading the best journalists who use that feeling to perfection, I can`t say I agree. Comes off more as ignorable annoyance.
Smokers would obviously feel that way.
Know what the righteous anger and disgust of a journalist is?
Read Hunter S. Thompson.
Read Warren Ellis` Transmetropolitan.
Perhaps then you can understand what those scary words mean.
I am not condescending so if anyone already knows this ignore it. You are already wise.
Lesson to the wise or would be wordwhores: When your writing is unrealised...rewrite. If this happens regularly, use theme trees/circles/diagrams etc prior to going medieval on the keyboard`s arse.
This anouncement is paid by Zeeshan`s relapse into caffeine.
Have a nice day and don`t trade insults with him. He doesn`t feel like going off like TNT (Tobey N Tuckah!) all the time.

excuse me for saying this but zeeshan miaN -- it is you who sounds confused – and incoherent.
madiha`s column is very clear and very lucid and to the point --
it is about passive smoking and its becoming a big tme health hazard for non smokers --
it`s very true -- passive smoking IS an uninvited scourge for non smokers – it’s an established fact bone by experiments that -- if a person smokes one pack a day and has a companion who doesn`t smoke -- the non smoker companion ends up SMOKING half of the pack of his/her friend’s cigarettes by passive smoking – with the same deleterious effects on his or her lungs and other organ systems -– a fact that should be totally unacceptable to non smokers -- and it should make the non smoker very very angry --
madiha`s anger is 100% justified -- and she has every right to protest against this disgusting habit
madihawaris has expressed her anger and disgust very well n a well written column against the violation of her civil rights by smokers -- who consider smoking in public or in restaurants their right to ‘pursuit of happiness’ and ‘personal freedom’ guaranteed by Constitution –
which is NOT…
great write up madiha -- very educative indeed. -- more power to ur pen.

You seem to be confused about your reasons. Writers should never be confused about what they write. NEVER.
I`ve played the villain for long enough so I won`t bother too much with the contradictions apparent but please rethink your post about your motives and your eventual achievement with the article. Your intended message and what message that we got.
Nobody was offended really. Someone else will pop up to explain if they care enough. I`m too tired right now.
But what you now say your motives are, are not symbiotic to what your article tells us about your expectations. El Conflicto Moreso.
But I`ll say this...
The image your words project to the audience is the image.
No matter how cool you may think you are in your own head, your ideas about what you`ve accomplished cannot mingle with the perception of the readership if they are poles apart. Perhaps if you write for your drawer you will accomplish all that you dream of. Writing is projection. Telepathy. If what you originally thought didn`t end up on paper...it didn`t. What ended up on paper is the real thing. Everything else is imaginary.
And I don`t think fiction is imaginary. 2d is as real as 3d. That`s all I`m going to say about the subject right now. My fiction deals with that.

it`s time i got my ass up and answered something, atleast...
this was not preaching. go through again. see, i dont really give whether smokers give up smoking or not; i know i `must` be concerned about saving the world and not my own ass, but i really dont give. the only reason I wrote this was because i was and i am, tired of people smoking in my and rest of the world`s face. i know, and you know, we don`t have to take in second hand smoke at all. i could have made this into a hate letter, gladly, all cuss and no preaching as you call it, but then, the opportunity to ridicule people i so cheerfully despise is rather golden. why waste. and look, i managed to offend some too. purpose achieved. so basically, the lecture was not a lecture at all. the point was not smokers, but non smokers and their right to beat the shit out of anybody who makes them inhale that crap.....yeah!
somebody insisted, yawn, smoking is a personal choice and yawn, i shouldnt hang around them if i want to save myself.
read the last paragraph again.
reading between the lines is important.
thankyou everybody for being so kind as to give feedback. it`s a treasure to me, even the smartass`s comments concerning `hempering` sperm production.

reduced? really? how? through smoking your lungs out? now don`t tell me men have quit smoking or anything of the sort. besides, the bottom line is, no smoker would give a jack about your terribly delivered sarcasm.
#41 Posted by ZeeshanMahmud on May 30, 2003 9:43:53 pm
I was avoiding this but I believe in the ``I showed you mine, now you show me yours`` rule.
First of all, reading up statistics and shit doesnt make the nonsmoker wiser than the smoker. They know very well what they`re doing.
And whatever gave you the idea that humanity was smart?
Lessons you ought to learn before you try to enlighten more ignorant people next time:
Quitting isn`t easy. It`s an insult to the weak people who`ve been trying to quit for a long time.
As an aside...I didn`t pick up a cigarette until my teens were on their dying month. I was convinced that I wouldn`t be able to make an intelligent choice when I was younger. Which did me good. I don`t need cigarettes. I wanna live out my natural life, it`s already too f*cking short. And there are other artistic reasons to avoid drugs, cigarettes and alcohol ones that I learned from my long time hero Stanley Kubrick. Who actually explained why he wouldn`t try LSD. Lot`s of people gave me shit (including the pretty girls in my school) that I was a wimp for not taking up drugs, alcohol, cigarettes etc. F*ck `em. Auto-substance abuse doesn`t make you auto-cool. And the day I need to be cool to someone else`s standards, I need to be shot in the face. I`ll piss on all their graves.
I don`t sympathise but I think you want your writing to do good rather than anything else.
2) Don`t make fun of people telling them that they need help. The world we live in anybody who doesn`t need therapy or is a poster boy/girl for sanity should be kept an eye out for. Don`t trust the sane. That`s what I always say.
3) Keep it brief. Don`t drag it out.
4) Preach only when significantly intelligent or charming. Preaching doesn`t work on people who don`t believe you`re either. Know your limits. If Chowk is chockful of smartarses and selfconscious it won`t work here.
5) Everybody knows this. Cigarettes = Cancer. Cancer = Painful death.
And anybody who thinks it hasn`t been proved I laugh at you and your silly reasons to keep on smoking.
If someone has lost the will to live, encourage quicker ways for them to rid us of the problem of overpopulation.
Smokers are a weak, cowardly and stupid lot.
A close friend who I spent a lot of the past three years with smoked like a sodding chimney and I was wondering if I should take up smoking just so his second hand smoke wont kill me first. Emotional blackmail from me, his family, his ex-girlfriend nothing worked.
But...
The patch helps. Anyone who wants to quit, has the motivation can quit with the patch. It isn`t that difficult if you have the motivation.
But who has motivation these days?
I`m itching to write a f*ck you hate-letter to smokers.
Someone ship `em to Mars. Bugger `em I want a better world.

UmerMurtaza #35 actually you can foretell the future i can see. as in the woody allen movie ``the sleeper`` where he wakes up in the future to see everybody smokes...because they discovered smoking prolongs life. exactly what kind of stuff do you smoke? i eagerly await your response, so i can also start smoking that stuff and become a futurist like you.
#37 Posted by nasah on May 29, 2003 6:59:27 pm
dear Umer -- u have to do better than this -- U have to say at 78 nicotine is THE treatment for Alzeimers -- `actually` nicotine `dilates` the arteries choked by lipid soaked parathaas and mucharrab roghan josh-- `in fact` nicotine prevents cancer of the lungs if smoked in moderation..... to complete the satire:-)
