storyteller, point taken.
urstruly, i agree to what you say, though partially, and I dont think you are saying anything derogatory here about women. As for the fatalistic part, I dont have much experience abt that. But desi females are certainly more politically aware and opinionated.Personally i would prefer the conquest of a castled Helen.Wouldn`t you? And i agree with you,as history states, its not gonna happen through the politically correct way. :-)

I regret your comment. Can`t a person express and hold an opinion which is off the beaten path. Why do we have to be so obsessive about political correctness.
The fact of the matter is that this fatalism, that I have mentioned, is the `in` thing among the desi educated female. I meet with more than often than you think with this sort. These women like girls or girls like women have pale skins like lizards and they drink coffee for lunch and can discuss anything from economic collpse in argentina to the karo kari in sindh in fluid slang american english. But they are really ecstatic when it comes to death and gore. It might be an `in` thing but it worries me. The problem is not with them, in my opinion, I think problem is with us, the men. I think our womenfolk (those that I have mentioned) do not find us ambitious enough. And they are right, political correctness has either neutered us or made us passive-aggressive, which is worst than being neutered by the way. Girls are ok, boys are doomed.

you know, thats what i was trying to do. i didn`t want huma to be a distinct or tragic figure, someone to be pitied. her experience of the boarding is common and i didn`t want it to sound too extraordinary. what happened to her could have happen to anybody.

Ah well, this seemed more like a memoir to me. A drastic ending does not a story make. I wonder what was different with Huma, then with anybody else`s experiences at boarding?
Maybe its just me, but I did not feel any empathy with Huma, as she is portrayed in the story.

are you for real!
please tell me that you are a bored individual and made that last comment (#14) to rile things up a bit.
noetherf:
i`ve read your poem and life, like death is a blessing. we get into trouble when our views of life and death get narrow. reason behind sad stories is simply that sad stuff happens.

what poem you are referring to?
Sometimes a deep dive into the sea of human condition is more interesting and challenging than watching the tides from the safety of shores.
I listen to Paula only because her voice reminds me of someone, otherwise, Jann is a class of her own.

yaar - these three conditions i.e. fascination with eating disorder, suicide and death are spreading like an epidemic among our womanfolk. Sometimes I wish no woman had an education beyond tenth grade. Those who start wiping the pithis of their kakas right after tenth grade look so alive, unadulterated, and pure. More education turns them into fatalists. A woman wishes to be conquered by a man - it is her nature. Education is a hard-to-conquer castle that entraps these Helens into itself. Not all men are so determined to breach its walls. Its the woman who defeats herself thus; and hence the fatalism.

yes, a partner who would complement me would make my life perfect. I think we are all born with half a personality. Our other personality lies within someone else. Sometimes the grief and darkness in other complements us - doesn`t it.

urstruly,
Although I hate to talk about depressing topics (the poem I posted was written four/five years ago), I will say this, there`s always a sound reason behind these sad stories so one should try to float in the sea of human condition rather than sinking in it or worse, to make others sink in it too. Life is a blessing and it should be enjoyed.
As for Jann Arden, I don`t know her. If she sounds like Paula, well, then she must be the same category.

that was a rather broad stroke, even for you. very little can be said to change someone else`s personal conviction which arises mostly from experience. so i`m going to do just that; say very little that is. glad you thought the story was well written.
a question- if you were to find the perfect companion, would life then be perfect? would it fill you so, that grief and darkness are kept at bay?

There is no doubt that story is written very well. I regret that I overlooked to mention that in my previous post (I am so self absorbed). However, what I was referring to was the subject matter. My question was why the lady writers nowadays so obssesed with subjects like eating disorder, suicide, and death (I also overlooked to mention the third item). Why? It seems that they haven`t seen a good day in their life for a long time. And my personal opinion is that they are completely disappointed by the men around them. All they have to do is to look a little bit harder. They will sure find many nigah buland, sukhun dilnawaz, paband-e-saum-o-salat gentlemen and cowboys still, in whose eyes they will find themselves. mayoosi gunah hay.
I don`t like Paula either, I like Jane Arden better - same category right?

Hey Urstruly,
Chill! It`s just a well-written story with, yes, depressing subject matter but hey, that`s it!
PS: I would prefer Morcheeba`s `Rome wasn`t built in a day`. Besides, I never liked that Paula Cole song.
Take care

eating disorder and suicide - do you girls know about anything other than these two things nowadays? What is wrong with you? Why always so glum? You girls need a decent company, porferably with a decent gentleman. Cowboys are still here despite Paula Coles` laments.
