In India too, I have heard terrible stories, in Ambala once I saw a man being beaten with Lathis between his legs because he had fornicated a cow(I am serious).

I understand the end of your article, where you pointed out a reality about some perverts which are in abundance in Pakistani bazaars. I love to walk in those bazaar to feel the thick culture which is as beautiful as anything could be, the only harsh reality that makes me sick and sad is this pinching, touching and dirty looks by dirty men..................this is a big problem..............there is no remedy except awareness b/c this curse is b/c of sheer ignorance and also b/c ignoring such problem and sweeping`em under the carpet to hide the garbage.......and then they have the nerves to say,``Oh, Pakistan is pure...........yes, pure...........haaaan..........................pure my foot!!!!

This pinching and harrassing attitude is not only for little boys. These perverts need any body regardless of gender to satisfy their perversion, they are the ones who will use even animals for their perversion.................I feel embarrassed.....I feel they are stigma for the land of pures..........I feel they should be dealth with strictly.................they remind me of wolves roaming free in the midest of that great colorful bazaars for their preys.................

Besides, that I am obsessed with those bazaars and specially shopkeepers , the way they deal with you is simply hilarious.....................

It is stupidity to term most japhian papian as sexual abuse......

Kurrian used to putt my gullan..........I never saw it as abuse ;-))....they would say mainu apnay waal they they.....baday sohnay nay.........they were indeed.....among other things.....

some of it can be seen as abuse by western standards........but it is the rough and tough Pbi.....makhol........

In Chandigarh, most of the pinching and `kanjarpana` was gholed by chooras and sex deprived ugly shopkeepers who don`t tie the loongi correctly........and one wift of strong wind exposes these peeping toms........
but many a times I`ve seen these kameens beaten up.......

We were waiting for a movie to begin at Piccadily in Chd.....we heard this loud shriek....it was a `Hupshan``....a few moments later.....a poolsia dragged this urchin choora from the line and thrashed him senseless.........he did this more to impress the hupshan than out of duty.....

the `real` abuse should be punished by sodomizing the culprit to death.......

Regardless of whether you are raised in the west or east, to experience something like this especially for the first time, can be quite nerve racking and it was those few moments after the event that i tried to capture. Also to challenge the myth that this happens only to young girls and women. Yes there are many ways of greeting each other in various societies, however the character in the story was not being greeted, so there is nothing for any other society here to take wrongly, or misinterpret.

Regards the sexual abuse that you talk about below, that is a very complex issue that this article does not attempt to deal with.

nice article ali bhai...very good descriptive account. Its still almost same in all the cities and towns in east Punjab as well( may be with exception of Chandigarh, which is anyway not a punjabi city officially)

The issue of sexual abuse of children is very complex and there are very significant cultural differences, e.g. going by western standards, much of the cuddling, kissing, ``jaffian-puppiyaan`` of small children by chachas,tayas, maamis, maasis, and bhuaas etc., may be termed as ``abuse``. Pinching, slapping on the butts or back, may be a way of greeting someone in traditional punjabi culture, but will be seen entirely differently in west.

Even in west, the problem is much more complicated than what it looks. In psychiatric practice in UK, we hardly see any patient who does not say that he/she was abused in childhood, and in may cases, this history/allegation is more often to justify their present ``depression`` or ``Post traumatic Stress Disorder``(PTSD) or drug/alcohol abuse, and more important than that,their ``disability`` and the social/financial benefits they get from the govt. Even the major share of the financial support and benefits from the social welfare deptt. is spent on alcohol and drugs. I hardly saw any case of PTSD during my 17 years of psychiatric practice,whereas in UK, I have seen too many in less than two years.

A child born and brought up in western society can obviously misinterpret such subtle behaviours which mostly go un-noticed in our traditional punjabi day to day life.

Beautifully wriiten. Sights and sounds of a typical bazaar are very vivid. However, the ending seems a bit narrower than the earlier expansive description of the life and observations of a boy. The ending almost diminishes the earlier observations.

Nevertheless, well written.
