I love listening to Terey Bin.
The day I heard him in the awards, I went and bought a CD.

Rabbi is different than others...I don`t know yet if he is better or not but he really unique..and soul penetrating voice...that compells you to listen again. I think Bullah number and Jugni was ok songs but I really liked toteta Manmoteya and Gill te Guitar....I think Toteya Manmoteya is his best number so for since it is really coming from his own life experience and from deep down his heart which still beats to be Punjabi and be in Punjab.

I would suggest it is better he work on his music and poetry right now and not worry too much about his other side described in the article. All of us have other sides..some times they are better than our main sides but an artist like him needs to cultivate his potenial to the greatest possible first. There is always time for working on the other side.

Bulla ki jaane, Aj Nachna, Jugni and Yaar mere are excellent songs.
I wish he could now compose an album with all its songs by Baba Bulleh Shah.

Following are excellent. (Apart from Khan Sahib, has anybody else
compose/sung these or other Baba Bulleh Shah`s kafis?)

1. Maati Kudam Karindi yaar
2. meri bukkal de vich chor
3. Ranjha Ranjha kardi ni main aape ranjha hoi
4. muuh aai baat na rahinde e

How about classic versions of Heer, Mirza, Sassi and others.

Mohammad Rafi, Jagjit Singh and other punjabi singers almost always start with
learning heer and then move on to others., sad that very few compositions of
original Heer exist out there. (mostly in bollywood movies from directors having
scant respect for original punjabi classics)

One anecdote about the great poet Iqbal. Somebody asked him that eventhough he
is punjabi why he still writes in Urdu? He replied that Baba Bulleh Shah
had already achieved heights in Punjabi which he wants to imitate in Urdu.

But the sad fact is that Hindi/Urdu both languages got immense contribution
from non-hindi/urdu speakers (mostly punjabi) at the expense of their own
mother tongue (punjabi). There is only one word for such people in my language
and that is ``Ahsaan Faramosh``.

Rabbi knows how to sing...that`s for sure....and though Junoon`s the coolest thing to happen to the world in the 90`s, Ali should feel ashamed for not learning to sing.

``Today, art instruction in the classrooms is pathetic, Rabbi laments. The budgetary allocation for arts and the importance given to it are scanty. The result is that we have generations after generations with little respect to aesthetics. He cites the examples of how our streets and parks are designed. Its not only the rich who have to be aesthetically oriented but also the common people who do seemingly unimportant work. Their combined work makes a city beautiful. Right art instruction in the schools is pivotal, he believes.``

I agree. Fauji freaks need to know they stink up the whole country!!!@!

This guy is excellent. Top of the list, as far as I am concerned. He can sing all kinds of Punjabi music, from pop to sufi. His rendition of Bulleh ki janna mein kaun is outstanding. My current favorite South Asian singer............

Here`s another sample of Rabbi`s spiritual lyrics....

The song is Laundiya from the movie Waisa Bhee Hota Hai

Laundiya Ke Pallo Mein Se
Gao Ki Boo Aawe
Gobar Ki Nail Mein Ek
Chota Sa Suwar Bhage
Kya Kare Baby Loot Gaye Hum Darling
Har Gaye Baby Thak Gaye Hum Darling
Hai Nahi Hum Mein Dum
Laundiya Ka Kangna Hai Jo
Dug Dugi Bajawe
Bandarya Ka Naach Naache
Aur Bhooke So Jawe
Kya Kare Baby Aapni To Laggai Hai
Har Gaye Darling Sab Ki Satak Gayi Hai
Hai Nahi Hum Mein Dum
Laundiya Ke Bindya Pe Se
Pasina Tapke Re
Khusre Jo Khidki Pe Hai
Bidak Ke Lapke Re
Tabhi To Har Gaye Chaudary
Pighal Gaye Sanam Se
Chullo Bhar Pani Mein To
Doob Gaye Hum Kasam Se
Hai Nahi Hum Mein Dum

Kya Kare Baby Loot Gaye Hum Darling
Har Gaye Baby Thak Gaye Hum Darling
Hai Nahi Hum Mein Dum
Laundiya Ki Payal Hai Jo O O
Bande Ko Bandhe
Jakd Ke Jaat Pakde
Langde Ho Jawe
Laundiya Ke Pallo Mein Se
Laundiya Ke Pallo Mein Se
Laundiya Ka Kangna Hai Jo
Laundiya Ka Kangna Hai Jo
Laundiya Ke Bindya Pe Se
Laundiya Ke Bindya Pe Se
Laundiya Ki Payal Hai Jo O O
Laundiya Ki Payal Hai Jo O O

His fame even at mediocrity tells a lot about the low standards of his fans and listeners.

What are sardars reduced to?????!!!! - sissies.

Joe:

thanks!

is this the other side?

Minty Tejpal

The millennium turned. Y2K never happened. And I never met Rabbi. I did however leave Channel [V], get divorced, increase smoking and move back to Delhi to take up the first job with the only man willing to employ me – my brother! I joined Tarun and Aniruddha Bahal as a founder in the heady journey of tehelka. Rabbi was still on my mind – I traced his number and called him. Sometime in May 2000, in the midst of putting together the match-fixing expose, Rabbi Shergill walked into the tehelka office. He was wearing a calm, gentle demeanor over his trademark kurta pyjama. Smart sardar, looks like a bard, I thought. He spoke fluently in Punjabi and English, narrating a familiar tale of music companies hustling him, not recognising his talent. Yeah, sure. “You got a tape,” I asked?

Rabbi fished out a tape with just two two songs – Bulla ki Jaana and Aj Nachna. I heard Rabbi’s music for the first time sitting in my car. It was stunning – great voice, haunting lyrics and some real melody — unlike any other Punjabi music I had heard. It was music that touched you, made you ache inside and yet lifted you.
