Excellnt article and I`m very much inclined to read the book by Louise Brown.

Ms. Abira; I just came from the United States after six years and Lahore has changed quite a bit since that time. I really enjoyed your article and sometimes wonder that are we really better than people in the US? I mean, we got the same ills in the society as they do so where exactly do we stand??

Best Regards,
Umer Sheikh

Money and prostitute both turned out, was exactly is Shahi mohallah, You thought of nothing else if you didn`t have it and thought of other things if you did. Right !

.... i don`t understand the bouhaha about prostitution - i can think of worse professions: garbage collector, code coolie, mullah, prime minister of pakistan, vegetarian food critic, chowk editor, the third wife of a prophet or the first and only wife of an indian ............... the kanjars are the only honorable people in pakistan who are providing a much needed service - they deserve our gratitude and respect ..........

kulhareeji, these bleeding hearts are how do i put it, stupid. Ferzana once wrote about some woman called Gudiya being ``used`` by the media. i mean, its not like poor women (and men) are having a nice life anyways..a poor woman also gets to have unpleasant sex, slavery and starvation. sex workers who are poor are making the best of their opportunities and why should we not celebrate them? its not glorification of slavery, its celebration of human endevour.

Hamid Saab.. I think it is pretty neat piece. However, it reads more like an editorial than a book review. I read Brown’s book, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. If the writer, supposedly an educated elite (well she talked about Karachi Gymkhana), a lawyer, didn’t know that Kanjar was a social caste until she read the book, you can imagine how repugnantly uninformed are those supposedly un-educated. In other words, a Desi has to learn about his own culture from a Gora (Brown in this case). That, my friend, is worse than the unregulated sex trade.
