Hitler wrote in Mein Kampf that books should be read and then thrown away, after absorbing whatever you like in them. I didn't like anything in his book....but I still like to tell people that i have read it. It also occupies some very valuable space (to me) on my bookshelf. Is that ironic or what

Ibrahim:
This passage is so hilarious..and so non-judgmental. You are
a nice addition here.
You could have afforded a shorter article.
_____________________________________________________
..."as perfectly acceptable in Pakistan five years ago when I used to travel by W-11 bus to office and it still must be. In W-11 if the passenger is reading a newspaper, the person beside him also tries to read the same. Moreover, people behind his seat are also looking over his shoulder trying to read the headlines. And the guy standing beside his seat holding the overhead railing is also reading it. Moreover, they sometimes ask him to procrastinate the turning of the page till everyone has read all the headlines..."
thanks a lot.

I somehow tend to ignore heavyweights myself . Life is so busy and stressful now adays that I for one can not afford to read politics all the time.
I know this is not "My Self' essay but personally I think travelling to new places teaches one then books. I read the Kite Runner and it somewhat effected my life - I became close to my family especially dad - then theres this book called 'how to treat criminals' , after reading the book I with no shame acknowledge I treat even the hardcore criminals with respect except the child molesters !
Books does make a difference!

i agree to the writer, one must look at those books on the book shelf which are not read and keep reminding oneself as to how less she or he knows

To the author - Nice article. One doesn't see such articles on chowk any more.

Thanks for the article! It makes a change...and I cannot imagine life without reading or books!

IB is absolutely right! I've been a frequent chowk visitor since 2002 and it's not often I come across articles that make me feel good.
I also felt the social pressure you talked about when I was filling in the "books i read" section at orkut, because i guess what you read defines you to a great extent. Although I sometimes like to indulge in Wilbur Smith and Stephen Fry, even Michael Moore, I felt like I need to put in some heavyweights like Chomsky, Dostoevsky and other 'sky's just for the heck of it. Good to know there are others out there

Nice article but why not Grisham? The guy writes in golden ink...the way he deals with American law, civil liberties... after a while the books get a bit predictable though but still captivating reading his books I wished I had studied law.....do read him you won't regret.
