why are only Hindi movies, no matter how grotesquely masaledaar, selected for oscars and such by the Indian Film Board or whatever dinosaur agency decides these things...like tripalsdi rightly said, a lot of great cinema is made in India in vernacular languages which does not get the acclaim or exposure it deserves

Indian Cinema is much more than Bollywood. There are some great films in Bengali, Malayalam, Marathi, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu. Good to see a review in Chowk of a nice Telugu film. It is high time regional films in India get a broad audience. In the past few years Marathi Cinema has given some great movies. Marathi films are known for good scripts and content. Films that need to be mentioned are Dombivali Fast, Uttarayan, Doghi, Maati Maay, Anaahat, Devrai, Bangarwadi. Many of these films are available with English subtitles. There have been great Kannada, Bengali, Tamil and Malayalam movies too.
Many Indians have rejected good Marathi/Kannada/Malayalam films and prefer watching Masala Bollywood films.

Thanks all,
Vanaja opened last Friday in Berkeley and San Francisco
and recently in the Los Angeles area.
I believe that 3rdi is one of the San Francisco sponsors.
This certainly in a unique movie. It does contain some
mature themes (including rape) and brief male nudity.
But the final outcome is very moving. This kind of film
from India could win an Oscar for best foreign film.
For all the Indian film buffs out there,a question:
Has any Indian Movie won an Oscar since Mehboob Khan's
"Mother India" during the 1960's which brought Nargis
international fame? And let us not include "Gandhi" because
it was made by people outside of India.

Ras,
Thank you 4 the review. It's shameful that this film is not released in AP/India. Come to think of it even Tiladaanam that won national and intl awards was not yet released in AP/India.
The interview with the director is eqully interesting. He's indeed creative.
