I read your article... but you sound like a half-baked twit with an 'army background' (sorry if that is harsh). Accept life, accept debate. Debate is good and 'nobody has a monolopy on wisdom'. Accept art.
By the way, there are also very strong economic reasons why art prices have gone up... Lets see if the present credit crunch takes some of the froth off the art martket.

Candidates seeking to contest the same National Assembly seat in Lahore had complained that Sharif was ineligible because of a conviction on charges related to the 1999 coup, in which Musharraf ousted his government.
A court convicted Sharif of hijacking and terrorism charges for trying to prevent a plane carrying Musharraf back from a foreign trip from landing in Pakistan, despite a shortage of fuel.
A year later, Sharif agreed to go into exile for 10 years to avoid a life sentence in prison.
Rivals also complained about Sharif’s alleged default on a bank loan and an incident in 1997 in which Sharif’s supporters stormed the Supreme Court.
Zaman said only that the objections were ’accepted’ and provided no details.

Clothing stores in Thailand have seen a rush to buy pink shirts, thanks to a fashion craze sparked by the country's King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
Thais have been queuing in their hundreds to buy the shirts ever since the King left hospital last month wearing both a pink shirt and blazer.
The Phufa fashion chain said it had sold 40,000 pink shirts this month.
"Our factory is making these shirts every day, every minute day and night," said a spokeswoman for the company.
"We had no idea they would be this popular."
King Bhumibol spent three weeks in hospital last month having treatment for heart problems and other ailments.
Wearing pink brings the king luck. I don't want him to be sick
Rose Tarin, civil servant
Thai commentators said pink first became an important colour for him earlier this year, when royal astrologers determined it was a good colour for his health.
On that recommendation, a pink royal crest was designed for his 80th birthday on 5 December.

Really enjoyed it. Modest and yet so true. I liked the honest, tongue-in-cheek approach. :)

The article is a piece of art. How many of us felt the same way as author? 100%? Apart of some references to cultural specific things (to Paksitani school curricula and textbooks) almost entire article can be understood by virtually all English reading people. That is not a small achivement. And judging from crowd here at chowk either a reader would have gone through same schooling experience or would be interested in finding out more about it. That is dialogue. What more an article is supposed to achieve?

The purpose of literature & art should be to provoke thought and engender debate in society. Salman rushdie did it well with his ‘satanic verses’, arundhati roy is quite good in this respect, maybe mohsin hamid getting there as well, apart from these other desi writers aren’t really clued up.
