Like a painting done in the verbal medium. Also a very nice build-up to the final para. And one can have some fun wondering what the shadow represents - the essense that every object has, per the concept of the platonic ideal perhaps.

FarzanaVersey & GhalibZaman,
Truthfully speaking, but quite shamefully so, I Dont read and write urdu too well! But i still keep trying to develop a habit of reading urdu.
Its quite interesting to hear that you think this piece is like a miniature painting, because at the moment that is exactly what I`m doing, painting in the miniature technique!

Sabeen:
I am prompted to ask what GhalibZaman has...do you write in Urdu? In fact, do you think in Urdu? This is like a miniature painting, but done on glass. A great deal of naazuki here.
samina:
My favourite passage too!

Sabeen:
after this i went back and read your earlier work…don’t know how i missed it…therefore this belated welcome to chowk…
as an ‘artist’…and here am using it cautiously…you must have more than a passing insight into lines and curves and shadows and light…and i feel to that you have blended sustaining emotions…in a deliberately subtle way…crying or misty eyes have been described poignantly The light blurred into colored smudges in front of her eyes, and for a while she was happy that the flashes of orange and green were all that she could see.
life is seldom right or wrong, black or white, light or shadow
life is composite grayness that we muddle through
sometimes knowingly, most time, i suspect, unknowingly
grayness is life that we decidedly allow to assume other colours.

Sabeena:
A very-much at home serenity and comfort. Salaam!
Quite philosphic and introspective and still retaining the innocence of childhood.
How do you do it Sabeena?---Do you read & write Urdu very well?
Do you, as a writer, feel that seriously pursuing other artistic endeavours restrict or release your muse.

simple and moving
please write and share more, we need more thoughtful, pensive writers like you instead of the usual chichoray who bring politics and religion into everything.

``... Night is the time of darkness and evil they had said. Inside the house there were shadows but there was also darkness. Darkness was not a shadow, it was just darkness with no light. But when darkness met with light it changed into a shadow. That’s how Laila understood the hows of shadow casting. The way she saw it, everyone was full of darkness....``
(My favorite passage)
Ms. Idris,
Keep going!

``But when darkness met with light it changed into a shadow. . . . everyone was full of darkness. Which explained why the dentist always held a little light when he looked inside her mouth, because it was dark inside. When it wanted to come out the darkness would seep from the soles of her feet but on meeting the light outside it became a shadow.``
Awesome!
Awesome!

`She wanted to see if he still had a shadow, did the darkness inside leave once the life had gone?`... a beautiful thought provoking line
