After a couple of days of being a Nihari binge,

nothing beats some daal chawal or roti.

And after a couple of days of daal roti ....?

sameerjb: My wife reports on her return from a visit to Pakistan that of a house where the servants refuse to eat daal and eat nothing but meat (they consider daal beneath their dignity), while the people they supposedly serve lap up on the daal and vegies (being alerted to the dietary aspects).

Tidbit:
I am glad you have become aware of it and determined to do something about it. Human body is a machine you own. Fall in love with the self and take good care of it like people take care of their most precious posessions.

scout:
Your reference in that post was with respect to bad oral hygiene and not hairy legs. Hairy legs were mentioned by Tidbit in her previous article.

sobia:
I hope your big feet only matter when it comes to finding right pair of shoes. Girls feet are not important in guys vocabulary. I recall only one instance, in movie Pakeeza when hero concentrates on feet of sleeping Meena Kumari.

daudpota:
Beef is protein and fat is carbohydrates - fatty acids. I am sure you know that both have different chemistry. The body fat comes from larger than required intake of calories where protein calories provide energy and carbohydrates are accumulated. Therefore, it is fat that comes with not so lean meat rather than meat itself.

To save forests, human control of their own population boom is becoming more important than raising cattle on cleared forests. Life eats life for survival and human are sitting on top of this food chain. Moreover, substututing beef with pork eliminates many of the problems you mentioned. It takes 3500 calories of feed for per pound of beef whereas in the case of pork, it takes 2000, plus they produce litter instead of one or two babies per year. Moreover, the pollution of water resources and deforestation is less because of the lazy lifestyle of pigs.

Note only is fat reduction important, it is important to look at the source of fat. See the following:

``Dear Cecil:

I was recently told that McDonald`s serves about
600 million burgers every year. Out of idle,
perhaps morbid, curiosity, I wonder just how many
unfortunate cows much die each year to fill this
incredible demand. --Michael J., Los Angeles

Dear Michael: There are a lot of variables in
this question, so the answer isn`t going to be
very exact, but here goes: your average cow (as
opposed to my average cow) weighs somewhere in
the neighborhood of 1,000 to 1,200 pounds when
it`s ready for slaughter. Once it`s been butchered,
about 700 to 800 edible pounds remain. Depending
on how the carcass is divided up, some 12 to 15
percent of that total weight becomes hamburger
meat--which means roughly (very roughly) that one
cow is good for some 100 pounds of burger meat.
You were probably floored when you heard that
McDonald`s pushes 600 million burgers a year, right?
Well, you better sit down, pal, because the actual
sales figure as of 1993 (the last time I checked
was more like five and a half billion burgers a
year. That`s through the entire worldwide McDonald`s
system, of course, not just in the United States.

For more, see:

http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a1_186.html ``

It gives pause for thought. As you cut out the fat and meat you can feel good about yourself and the saving of forest that will result from reduced cattle farming.

disclaimer: this article is not exercise in profundity...just a crazy lil confession of sorts....

rozaiba: one should also not look like a ripe timaatir (tht is applicable to me only :))...but its not a life-long abstinence....an occasional indulgence here and there u know...

rabs: thank you

sameerJB: yes i learnt about healthy eating the hard way...it could be a fictitious account but it isn`t...sorry ji :)

Radhika: :)) thank u...exercise is here to stay trust me...

khamkhwa and temporal: thanks...t sahib...trying to maintain it as best as i can...

fara and sobia: *grin*

tahmed: you sound just like my instructor :))...grazie molto....i need all the encouragement i can get...

scout: :p

wazzy: yep i can...u know why?? cuz if i leggo thora sa bhi i put on weight so fast tht its crazy....

adnan_rafiq: thanks...and yes i deserve tht pot o` roast

cyberian: tis so true...it bites but its true....

after thought: i was never fat..never!! but tht was maybe cuz i lost all my baby fat while i was growing up and somehow had the good sense to watch what i was eating...all that changed some two years back... circumstances changed and so did my eating habits....but Allah ka shukar I`ve learnt to deal with the real issues...and not just the symptoms...which is what makes `winning this battle of bulge` so worthwhile...

being healthy (normal weight and all) is important to me because i know i can look good if i make the effort...that i have potential :p...i know it sounds twisted but thts just the way it is...

thanks everybody for reading this...and for encouraging me to maintain a healthy lifestyle...the struggle continues...

take care and eat right :p,

samina

Tidbit,

Also check with your doctor and make sure that your blood sugar, triglycerides, cholesterol and other functions are at appropriate levels. If your family has experienced a predisposition to certain diseases, it may explain the excess eating to alleviate biochemical proceses. For example, if your body was craving sugar or protein, it may be a result of a defieciency or an indicator to be careful with your diet to stave of onset of hereditary conditions.

So happy to hear that you are active and healthy! Congrats!
