Stump Fight at the OK Headingley
Posted by Rooster-Blues Jul 5, 2001 11:06 am
What is the big deal about the matter ? … English media should be more concerned about British Hooliganism than some Pak-Brits invading a pitch .. Pitch invasion does not even come close to the amount violence and racial tone reflected in the English soccer culture … ‘We rather be a Paki than be a Turk’ was one of the popular slogans of 40,000 + Brits who were in Turkey for the European League championship game (not to mention the violence and fatalities reflected by British goons) … The pitch invasion is blown out of proportion .. it was just a mob mentality which frequently happens in stadium sports .. nothing much happened .. much of the blame lies with ECB after all they are the ones who defended and supported crowd on the ground. Now what do you think is going to happen ? Bunch of 50+ year old Brits (those are the only British fans in the stand!) are gonna take a stroll down the green? .. Reality check .. it will be the hot headed emotionally broiled fans ! .. what does being a Pakistani or not being one has to do with it … sip on your tea , get rid of yellow teeth stains Brits .. and for you all apologists ..stuff your sorry attitude in a sack and worry about more important things ..

Excellent! But I don’t think that is unique to Pakistan… most of the Media is influenced here in USA too .. they deliberately make ‘mistakes’ (in case of CNN its pure JHALAAT .. they showed repeatedly clips of Indian hi-jacked plane when they reported Nawzz’s hi-jacking of Musharf’s plane) .. the difference here is the process …here it is very refined (which limits not eliminate the corruption factor) .. its not outright corrupted but they have methods of reporting which does not amount to fair journalism … for example there are more American-Palestinian detained in Israel than American-Chinese in China but since China is out of favor here these days it gets a negative publicity ..… here it’s a matter of ratings where the establishment rewards the good boys with more interviews .. favorable response i.e. more senators/congressman appearing on your network , better access to officials, exclusive ‘breaking news’… it is very hard to distinguish between CNN and Chinese state run media … I guess we need more journalist who keep pointing at this issue .. by default they are presumed to be representing neutral point of view, this perception is more heavy in democratic countries … good article

What’s Wrong with Pakistani Cricket
Posted by Rooster-Blues May 14, 2001 06:52 pm
Ditto .. I always bring that point up that Cricket is not a different happening from what goes on in Pakistan generally .. its not lack of talent that is missing here, when almost every male plays or have played cricket in this country you are bound to have talent … Lack of setup is totally missing from the sports in Pakistan … any sport you play on professional level has to have a coaching system .. which we don’t have on any level of any the sports played on this side of the continent .. The education thing is toothily irrelevant .. case in point NBA, NFL, NHL, FFIA … putting a professional setup is an expensive proposition … the coaching does not start at the top level it does start at the very basic level where players learn the system, techniques and discipline … South African cricket is a prime example of that unlike Australia (current team) they don’t have Waughs or Warens .. except for Doanald and Pollock the rest are very ordinary crickters yet it is the best eleven out there … the sole reason being excellent coaching and the ability of their players to follow and maximize their potential by following the system …

Desi Olympics 2000
Posted by Rooster-Blues Oct 12, 2000 10:04 pm
Olympics are staged to honor ‘First World Athletes’ .. and that is the bottom line .. sure one can argue that few African and under developed European countries (Romania) countries get those medals .. Look at the Athletic events , there is Volley-Ball and Beach Volley-Ball, Baseball and Softball and hell now they have all these stupid sports in which Americans and European excel .. Why cant we have Cricket as an Olympic sports .. It did show up as an Olympic sports in 1900’s Olympic .. the only match played then was between England and FRANCE! Now that brownies have stepped in the ring with 1.7 billion + and always growing sub-continental fans why cant we have one day Cricket with regular and tape ball .. why not .. han The Americans and Europeans have started playing it yet thats why JIMBO … even Kabadi and Somo ( I bet we can win a Somo medal if we pick a Gunjranwala Pehlwan) why not .. American Fatso softball team can play Kabdi well ..

And to top that all .. more like a root cause is the non existence of sports culture in the subcontinent region .. parents, society does not approve or encourage the youth to participate in Sports … for the ones who some how come in sports/athletics there is no coaching and infrastructure .. well I can go on and on

BUT (a big butt like the one that Pitcher of American softball had) the event is a representative of American And European athletics … not subcontinent or other countries (except for China and Japan) who some times get a ‘candy’ for participating .. Thank you very much third world athlete you might wanna buy a Trampoline to win a medal in the next Olympics!

The only thing close to ‘Human Rickshaw’ I have seen in Pakistan is Two Seater Cycle-Rickshaw .. which only exists in few places (couple of towns).. you will find em in Bhawalnagar, Cheestiyan (generally around that area)… that is a lot of hard labor .. but people have to make living …The highest number of Auto-Rickshaws are in Faisalabad… I never seen/heard/smelled a Human-Richshaw in Lahore … yeah .. .. Lahori Rickshaws (auto) are a very painful ride .. you will dislocate some bones when it hits a pot-hole/ditch (logically no transport in Lahore can miss it).. I have seen Rickshaws get turnover on speed bumps.. and driver simply turn them up and passengers get a refund and bruised head .. they stop in the middle of the road if you move your thumb/finger (does not matter which one) .. and some dude ends up slamming his bike into the Rickshaw… well enough of Ricshawology!

RE: Amit #55

I agree with the spirit of reply… India and Pakistan are not going anywhere they will be better off if they kiss and makeup rather than wasting their resources on claims of being better than the other… the core of the Pak-India relation is EGO … (from a very simple but true point of view) it is only bringing misery to the common man

About the India Arab/Muslim world relation… well your talking about two different scenarios here.. Pakistan is the ‘neighbor’ and former part of India .. with shared history and heritage .. the problem/relationship has grown complex. And it is always more bitter when you break off with some you known for so long as compare to some one who you had a Hello Hi relationship… For other countries (Muslim countries) there is no direct conflict of interest ( there is no Pan-Islamic movement !!!).. and Arabs have a very cold foreign policy .. make no mistake.. Arabs do not mix ideology with the state business … the corner stone of Arab foreign policies (in general) is to protect their own regimes and existence. Turks don’t even consider themselves as part of mainstream Muslim society … they are eager to shed their Asian and Muslim ids and become ‘European’ … (only be haunted centuries later as Bosnia .. remember who were they before being European?) …speaking of Arabs they don’t give a s….t about Kashmir except for ‘fundamentalists’ .. for them it’s a land dispute between two hostile neighbors .. which is not their problem!

RE: veeresh

``Is this the only book written by Pakistani in English? There are reviews all over the Indin print media too . . .``

That has to be one of the stupidest question ever posted on Chowk… now if Indian media reviews only one book will that mean that there is only one book in English written by Pakistani?. Well start moving around stick your neck out ….there are other media/sources in the world too, I have never read any reviews about any Indian fiction in Pakistani paper (they might be out there that I never came across one). So going by your logic things that are mentioned in the Indian media exist and any thing beyond that does not ??.. hmm…

Why I’m proud to be a Pakistani

RE: satish

Well you will be surprised there are bunch of institutions and minority recognition in Pakistan .. Now you seem like got irritated by my question… and institutions that you mentioned are mostly minority based any way.. I was talking about nationally established mainstream institutions, drawing comparison between Pakistani minority and Indian minority is apple and oranges (they both have vitamins!) … Indian minority is huge , Pakistani minority is a minority in itself.. that does not imply that they should have less recognition or rights… Indian science has lot of Muslim contribution in recent history( who is the daddy of Indian nuclear bomb?), yet we don’t here as much recognition…

Off hand I can remember ( I personally don’t remember many, the reason being that I have spent only about 3 years of my life in Pakistan ).. perhaps some one else like to contribute?

Dial Singh Collage in Lahore

There is a Blvd. In Queta named for Major Chritie (I think that was his rank) who was awarded highest military honor

Karachi, Lahore and other Pakistani cities have bunch of roads named after Hindus ( pre-partition)

Nankana (birth city of Sikh Guru)

And I bet a lot of Pakistanis would not know this either – There is synagogue in Karachi!

RE: veeresh

I totally agree subcontinent-human does not get much respect in Middle-East or any where for that matter, being born in KSA and spending most of my adult on going life here in US I do find that we (that is Pakistani and Indians) are treated better in the western world. But we are not treated equally anywhere after-all ! As a Muslim ( and a proud one) I do not find anything common with Arabs (besides praying next to one), and although I don’t find a lot of common stuff with Hindu culture either, but it is a lot easier to communicate and draw mutual respect. I have been to Arabic to Urdu to English school systems, it was hard to communicate or befriend an Arab; they always treated Hindi and Pakistani as ‘Sawa Sawa’ (meaning Indians and Pakistanis are the same). I use to take offense in it until American Janam helped me to interact with more Indians (basically more Hindus , since there are a huge immigrant population in KSA). I did find a lot of things that we share yet disagree on more… cricket, marriages, relationships and movies ( although I personally dislike Indian movies .. not for being it ‘Indian’ but content.. but it’s a source of entertainment for lot of Pakistanis). Speaking of Arabs, Pakistanis do (mostly institutional rather than common masses) give more than due respect to Arab’ heritage’ .. why can’t we name Faisalabad Pours-Abad ( he was the brave son of Indus land) and Quadifi stadium after Dulla-Bhati ( stadium should have been named after a hero not a lunatic!) .. speaking of naming.. I don’t find India taking pride in its Muslims or other minorities … how many missiles war ships, universities, schools and stadiums are named after Indian Muslim/minorities notables? (please do point out if you have one .. I mean this in a constructive manner)

Should Pakistan start a Virtual University?

RE :amenas

Marie Antoinette saying, ``let them eat cakes.``’

Right on dude (or dudes )! I have not seen any numbers/results that will indicate that how Virtual/Cyber education contributes to the education level. The goal of virtual institutions is convenience (time, place, accessibility) its not a system in itself, it is just an aid to an established conventional system. I don’t see how government can contribute beyond providing basic infrastructure (elec., tel. Lines, ‘loose’ legislation), Government/establishment has not proven that it can even provide basic education effectively, providing higher level (by government) education will only complicate/cripple the matters even more. It will result in inefficient distribution of resources ( government will decide who, where and when), I still believe that we should have some sort of cyber education (it will not increase the level of education but will help to improve the education who already has one) .

Fairdinkum:

‘Ireland is an excellent example. Ireland came out of 17th or 18th century and without learning to walk first (i.e., going through the industrialization period & without learning the tricks of the old economy) they are flying high on the back of the new economy...they have embraced the new IT/communication and services sectors and are doing very well.’

Well I agree Ireland did 180-degree turn. But ( big but like ‘Anjuman’s butt) you are comparing two entirely different and irrelevant situations. They had the education system in the first place and most off all they exist in a different part of the world they are part of a resurgent Europe, they have Uncle and Auntie who are there to help them out . As far as Pakistan we live in a dangerous and unstable neighborhood, here we have a ‘Bull’s pile’ problem versus what Ireland has (IRS is a ‘bird dropping’ compare to what we have). I totally agree with you that we don’t have to learn old ways of the ‘developed world’ but we do have to climb the first step to reach the top of the ladder.

Sheesh Naag (aka Dildo … ) Man or what ever your existence is … where did I say that I am more learned than Mr. Kamal .. now I did not know that you are his TATAA .. all it was a simple observation .. you made all that conclusion of it .. I did not criticize the desi accent it was again an observation I have no problem with it al all .. And to what ever radio station I listen to is my business.. your business is to find out where was your mama when the lights went out in NY .. your DNA might help!

Why I’m proud to be a Pakistani

Since we are talking about pride and stuff… I just came back from lunch and I had to share this with my fellow chowkies .. I was listening to public radio (in Chicago) and I detected this heavy desi accent slamming US over Kashmir ? guess who he was .. Ambassador Kamal Ahmed ( I think that’s his name ) .. Mr. Ambassador in more or less words summarized the whole problem as the ‘unwillingness of US initiative’ in the region … Mr. Wonderful kept repeating ‘the ball is US court’ .. how could it be a US concern when India denies any reference of Kashmir in Pakistan-India relationship and Pakistan insist that the only part its playing is ‘moral’ .. ?

I can make this a long post but it will end up ….. .. you know where

When asked about the problem of the population in Pakistan , Mr. Kamal (Kamal ka Admi Hai!)

Said .. that we did bring down the rate of population growth and the main reason behind that is electricity … and I said wha?? What ? .. and Mr. Kamal Ka admi explained that since most of the villages in Pakistan did not have electricity in the past ,.. the nights use to be longer and that was the main reason behind population explosion ! .. now if I am interpreting it correctly (keep in mind that I am analyzing sales numbers all morning) Mr. Ambassador blamed ‘horny village population !

What do you think guys??
