shandana,
the book group has brilliant books for children, in urdu...theyre doing a great job of bringing urdu story books to bachooz, something that was very rare a few years ago... these books are screamingly bright, funny and informative.. and very reasonably priced also... aamlate (omlette), naani, khatarnaak chipkali, mera sheher and mota haathi are some titles from the top of my head, all localized and so much fun to read.. i buy some whenever i can for nieces and newphews, most of whom are encouraged by school and parents to read only english story books, lady birds, etc etc.. i feel these books will help the coming children (how funny that sounds) take more interest in urdu fiction, literature, than we do or can

a friend who does illustrations for childrens books professionally might illustrate aloo and family for free or a nominal fee, if she can be enticed...maybe publishers will be more receptive to the complete `product`?... ill be in touch

French Fries vs Freedom Fries

gullahbaba
the freedom-french fry issue is more amusing than anything else
whats blowing my khopri is the rhetoric, fact maroring, emotional bullshit and downright bakwaas thats coming from institutions, representatives of those institutions and collectively, mainstream america... after being told all along that they be the civilized, its disturbing to see them behaving like a jamat-e-islami jalooos gone wild.. lets hope this madness ends quick and as few as can be people are hurt on both sides
big fat hug :0)

rehan, sameersaab, thank you

samina
i saw it at the karafilmfest- a week long film festival screening shorts, documentaries, features & films from all over the world..organized by young pakistani filmmakers, 9/11 was screened as something of an appetizer... monsoon wedding followed soon after.. i liked hamdani`s mom at the funeral but thought it could have been more tear jerking :).. but maybe that was the idea- to not leave the viewer sniffing but deeply disturbed

The Unmaking Of Gujrat
Posted by anNy Dec 17, 2002 07:42 am
like always farzana, my sympathies...you should stick to writing about silly asininesque things like loneliness..what losers u be..what incredible losers..and then these pigs have the audacity to tell me my country kills its minorities...the ulat pulat twists put on gujrat are wonderfully unbelievable..your state is part of the killings and these guys..your baniyas are justifying the killings of so many...so nicely..and theyre so convincing..its not india dear, its modi...india is secular...ohyeah baaaaby, secular....secular my ass.....buy yourself a one way tikkie to bangladesh or scotland behna..warna one of these days youll find yourself in a dark galli with an arjun_m or rsirdhar type smriking with a bazooka (Farzana is a Pakistani soul in an Indian body, what a poet he is) and then therell be no more disheartening feedback only lots of flavoured milk in jannat

`My sis-in-law had gone to Karachi (in the early 80s) & it was`nt considered ``proper`` if she went to visit relatives in slacks...forget about a girl in her late teens wearing shorts in the house! ..maybe Karachi has changed now, has it? anNy?`

hello dear...last time i wore thaaaat sinful thing IN THE HOUSE some two years ago my barae taya, may he rest in peace, almost died...maybe i helped him along, what u think?...but seriously, a lot of people wear alll kinds of things..i think the thing about our society is that u have all sorts doing all sorts of things..we`re so messed up because of the discrepancies, no one set of rules...whats completely okay in say, mums side of the family (clothes) makes aunts from dad`s side of the family swoon with fear over what will become of this besharam larki...thats within one family...differences in different families are huger..there are homes where women can wear anything from the skimpiest of shorts to chotae chotae ventilating tops and then homes where slightly deep necked shalwar kameezes or sleeves that dont come till your writsts are frownded upon..u get?
okay kisssesss!

sattar2
is it me or are u getting cattier by the post?
points can be made without this overdose of sarcasm and such disastrous wit as you may percieve it...your past interactions spoke very well for you; right now you sound as much like a loser as your buddy truly..
do excuse if its not my place to be reprimanding your kind self
