It is very surprising that pakistan has more or less the same technology like india, but has no research capability. Will some enlightened pakistani like YLH, or ferozk tell the truth.

Then of course there is complaint about foreign pakistanis not helping the local ones. This is factually untrue, so many of pakistanis abroad have come to pakistan to be trained by laskers, jaish mohammed etc. So the simplest suggestion from this great academic making policy prescriptions should be to coordinate his visionary collaborations with the laskers.

There are inherent strenghts in pakistani society, and it is centered around jihadis, and it is time that the educatde pakistanis learn to make use of these.

It is amusing to see those who came down in the last rain making such profound conclusions on the foundations of indian IT. The most singular reason for the growth in indian IT is the banishment of IBM from indian in 1970. This lead to the creation of ICL, DCM, SRIRAM, TATA etc. These indian companies developed their own capability to make softweares. Some of my class mated were involved in deveoping compilers for russian computers to run Fortran -4 at space center at trivandrum. It is the force of circumstances caused by the denial of technology by the largest computer company of that day which lead to spurt in indian IT.

Then of course is the hindu aversion to any menial jobs. IT, call centers etc are the perfect jobs, though menial does not have the image of meniality and the indian minds have taken it up like duck to water.

Pakistan needs a change in values, a system that honours the educated. Long long after the death of C.V> Raman, the indian nobel laurette, even today he makes the front page news when his discovery is being used.

In pakistan it is the sheeds that are honoured through shaheed foundations. The psosters are calling for jihad recruits, collection boxes are for jihad. What pervades the society is jihad. deliberate policy actions broadly in tune with societal values will bring about dramatic changes. A good example is the madrassa system in pakistan, initially funded by the US, now it is well entrenched in the pak society. The products of madrassas are running the NWFP, they are the thugs of karachi, they are in league with the army.

Something like IT or knowledge based system will never work in pakistan because it i inimical to the values. Ideal opportunity for pakistan is to encash the geographical location, improve the transport sector linking afghanistan and central asian countries. Truck drivers, loaders, road builders...that will work for pakistan.

Now under WTO, it is going to decline. All efforts to get better deals from europe and US has been rejected. Crunch time will come in another 18 months.
