Fatima Jinnah Park – Metaphor for Pakistan\'s Problems and their Solution
Posted by aslam644 Sep 7, 2007 10:22 am
Mr daudpota
I’m afraid things will get much worse before they get better, even the developed world has only recently woken up to the impact of development on environment. I have said many times before that priority in Pakistan should be education, environment, birth control, even if it means lower living standards in the short time, because south asia doesn’t have the luxury of the west of small population.

Re: # 51
I didn’t mean specifically church charities, now days western governments also prefer to deal with NGO’s they find them less wastage and corruption compared to third world governments. In present circumstances missionaries wouldn’t be welcome in Pakistan, the paradox is convent schools are oversubscribed that is the enigma wrapped up in mystery.

Lest we forget some of these church charities are doing tremendous amount of good work, they are into everything from providing shelter for homeless to child care, off course there are secular charities as well but they seem to lack the commitment of the church charities I wonder why. In Pakistan we have maulana edhi sahab and a few others, I’m sure if more people were involved in NGO’s in Pakistan it would have tremendous impact on poverty reduction. There is a scope to set up NGO’s in Pakistan because western charities are overflowing with cash, apparently the reports are there aren’t many reputable ngo’s in Pakistan to give the cash to.

The period of ZAB was disaster in economic terms for Pakistan even though it had massive inflow of aid from arabs and iran, nationalisation of industry and banks set the country back decades, banks have only just recovered from mismanagement and corruption. The demagogues of the third world like Nasser, bhutto were good at playing the politics of envy and jealousy, but the facts are they failed miserably to give their people better standard of living, compare that with dr mahathir of Malaysia he cooperated with the west, eliminated poverty and Malaysia is on the threshold of joining the first world.

As the tory party used to say the definition of a commie is he has fukk all and he wants everybody to have same.

I remember reading about an old convent in Yorkshire England, where builders discovered remains of young babies, it seems some of the nuns had gotten pregnant, god knows who by may be some catholic priest, the aborted babies were buried in the garden of the convent. I think in the past many of the catholic girls were forced to become nuns against their will.

It was in America self interest to rebuild Europe after ww2, because US prosperity depended on Europe as well, after all it was the Europeans who built American prosperity, people like Andrew Carnegie a Scotsman who left billions to American charities.

While the politicians in Pakistan are steeped in corruption, the reason why there seems to be less poverty in Pakistan than india is because of people like dr Martin sheriff, the guy came to UK as a ten year old from azad Kashmir in the 1960’s without speaking a word of English studied hard became a top surgeon. Then decided he should give something back to the land of his birth, through his efforts he had a 50 bed hospital built in rural mirpur.

MARTIN SHERIFF'S JOURNEY - GIVING SOMETHING BACK
By Martin Sheriff
Now a sucessful surgeon in Kent, Martin feels it's important to give something back to his motherland. The real chance to make a difference came when an earthquake devastated the region of his birth 2 years ago, when he set up a hospital in the area to help the victims and their families. In this film Martin travels back to see how life is progressing in Azad Kashmir.

Re: # 26
Vast majority are useless not up to job, India is better of putting money in primary education, rather than churning these robots out on a conveyor belt.
“Wait a second: this isn't what the picture is supposed to look like. For years, pundits and the press have been warning that the millions of engineers and scientists India and China produce each year would soon challenge the United States' technical superiority. Just a few months ago, the London-based think tank Demos warned in a report that "the center of gravity of innovation has started moving from the West to the East," and that China could become a "scientific superpower" by 2050. Indeed, the raw numbers are impressive. China cranked out more than 600,000 engineers in 2005 alone, and India produces nearly 500,000 technical grads annually.
But these stats only tell half the story. Many of the graduates can't find work, and corporate recruiters in both countries lament a dearth of qualified applicants. "Out of the huge number of engineering and science graduates that India produces, only 25 to 30 percent can be regarded as suitable," says Kiran Karnik, head of the National Association of Software and Services Companies. The reason? Underfunding and a range of other factors have produced serious educational crises in India and China. These problems could soon wreak havoc on their economies. To sustain their breakneck growth, the countries will need lots of high-quality engineers and scientists. Yet neither have enough reliable universities to produce them. M.A. Pai, who taught at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur, warns that the "lack of highly trained people at the Ph.D. level in both sciences and engineering will be a serious setback to India becoming a knowledge economy."

since lahore didn't have census in those days it's one man's guess that lahore's population was two million, we shall never know for sure.

the other point is this since India produces five times more engineers than US and Europe one never hears about any inventions from there, is there something missing?.
