Historian Amaresh Misra on South Asia
"The communities we see today are invented communities. For example, the pan-Indian identity was invented after 1857. The pan-Hindu identity was invented when a new middle class started emerging and started competing. And in competing it constructed its identity, which the British encouraged because they thought this kind of community formation would help them. So that is how modern communalism emerged in India. Communitarianism was an old phenomenon and was progressive, but communalism is regressive. In modern India the whole idea of community was distorted (by the British). The idea of a community based on soil, based on loyalty was replaced by a community based on vested interests"

Zalmay connect is the most unkindest cut of them all. Resolving Pakistan's problems through Zalmay will meet the same fate as Afghanistan. I have already written enough on it.
Something to look at are the new appointments in the army. The choice of ISI and CGS are noteworthy. Both are very professional and not known to have any soft corners for anyone. Forgive me to speculate but it appears that the much needed changes within the military and intelligence are now on.

I have reservations about Zardari for a very long time. I feel he has been sickeningly smart at home. But will it work in diplomacy remains to be seen.Zalmay connect is the most unkindest cut of them all. Resolving Pakistan's problems through Zalmay will meet the same fate as Afghanistan. I have already written enough on it.

We were teenagers then and suddenly this Nahid Niazi poem was eclipsed by Jagjit's Baat Niklay GHi to phir and 'Jag ne cheena mujh se mujeu jo bhi laga piyara'.
His quality comes out in the backdrop that he had to compete with singers like Ghulam Ali, Mehdi Hassan and Asad Amanat. He was an instant hit with youngsters here.

1977-79. Two events take place. Iranian revolution and Soviet occupation of Afghanistan.
EFFECT: A mock jihad supported by Brezinski's Christianity in favour of Muslims against a godless USSR. At the same time, a covert Sunni jihad begins against Shias supported by USA, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Creation of Kuwait fund for Balochistan becomes the neew way of funelling money. Sipa E Sihaba becomes very militant, kills Shias, fans insurgency of Sunni dissidents in Iran. Pakistan becomes the battlefield for Shia Sunni Divide. This militant organisation later splits into Jhangvi, Jaish and so many other loose groups with names like Amjad Farooqi, Qari Saifulla, Qari Zaffar, Qari Akhtar, Maulana Masood Azhar, Omar Sheikh and Khalid Sheikh, the mastermind of WTC bombing and 9/11 .
1997-98. US bombing of Afghanistan, Pakistani militant camps hit (mostly Sipah Sihaba Strain). The sectarians join hands with Taliban and al Qaeeda. Some caught in Kashmir. taken prisoners, compromised, exchanged. Omar Sheikh (British intelligence pawn) mysteriously forgets his diary in Indian Jail. Both Masood and Omar are exghanged after a hijacking.
9/11. These sectarians react by killing christians and attacking churches. Omar and Khalid Sheikh kill Daniel Pearl. (According to BB), Omar also kills OBL. They attempt at Musharraf. FIA building. US consulate. Sheraton and ...Marriot.
NOW. The most dangerous suicide bombers emerging from a sectarian group merge into the general strain of Taliban.
Despite such crimes, these home grown militant leaders keep getting bails on one count or another while hundreds of missing persons rot without trials.
Taliban become Cicero the poet and get killed for bad verses.
'Many SSP cadres have received arms training from the Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM) and the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. The organization is reported to be closely linked to the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), a Pakistan-based terrorist outfit active in Jammu and Kashmir. Various political parties in Pakistan, primarily the Jamaat-e-Islam (JeI) and the Jamaat-Ulema-e-Islam (JuI), have allegedly provided support and assistance to the SSP. The JuI is associated with running a large number of Madrassas all over Pakistan, which recruit for the HuM, SSP and Taliban'

An excellent expose of military limitations in perception and failure to challenge dictators is highlighted in two articles written by Lt. Gen Retired Shahid Aziz in the Daily Nation.
Now during Kargil, he was in ISI and a close confident and relative of Mush. In 1999, he was the director general military operations and executed the coup. Then he was Chief of general staff meaning that he headed the operations and intelligence branches. At the fag end he was the Chairman NAB.
so he is one man other than Kayani who walked the full distance with Mush. If that be the quality of his thoughts in his articles, than God Help Pakistan Army.
The generalship has indeed gone bankrupt, and this is what says it all in your one liner. Rest is gup shup!

The Marriott Bombing: ‘Pakistan’s 9/11’?
The suspect, Qari Zafar (photo), has become part of Al-Qaeda's hardline Takfiri inner circle. He enjoys the protection of Pakistani Taliban commander Baitullah Mehsud and is believed to be hiding out in the lawless South Waziristan tribal area of North West Frontier Province.
Zafar is not only the suspected mastermind of the Marriot bomb blast, but has created a network which will shortly target strategic installations belonging to Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence agency, military headquarters in Karachi and police stations across the country, according to security officials.
"Zafar is behind the planning, arrangement of transportation and procurement of explosives for the attack against the Marriott Hotel on 20 September, a top security source told Adnkronos International on Thursday on condition of anonymity.
"Some of his men have been arrested in Punjab which further confirms his involvement in the whole scheme, the official added.
The connection to Zafar was established from phone numbers found on the mobiles of some of those arrested in Punjab.
According to security agencies, the chances of arresting Zafar are slim as he rarely moves from his alleged hideout in South Waziristan to visit the various cities of North West Frontier Province.
To most Pakistanis he is an obscure figure, and is considered by security agencies to be a ghostlike figure whose trail went cold after he managed to escape from custody last year.
But he is known to international intelligence services which credit him with fox-like cunning and great bravery when organising and carrying out attacks against identified targets.
Originally from Karachi, Zafar was previously named as the leader of the banned militant Laskhar-i-Jhangvi group.
In 2007, he escaped from the custody of security services in the Punjabi capital, Lahore.
The United States government has put a 5 million dollar bounty on Zafar, according to the Rewards for Justice website.
Zafar is wanted for questioning in connection with the 2 March, 2006 bombing of the US Consulate in Karachi.
The attack killed three Pakistani citizens and US diplomat David Foy. Zafar is suspected of being a key figure involved with this attack
