Gandhi in The Handmaid’s Tale
Posted by scott Oct 5, 2005 06:17 am
So what is the relevance of this article and to whom?
Its written by a Pakistani - so are Gandhi`s views so influential in Pakistan? Or is it by deriding Gandhi we can exalt Quaid in comparison? Quaid has his own place he does not need these useless standards on who had better view on women.
Or is it relevant to Indians? They either have him on a pedestal, in which case they will not accept an point here. Or they hate him so there is nothing new to say then.
I think the main purpose is to have a masala article to spice up the Front Page with its falling standards.
And I rather read responses by the author than her defenders.

I think I know these people quite well. It could have been their story.

``Freedom from hindu animosity``
Obviously Hindus are the only ones who harbour such animosities.

I am intrigued by references to this Prof Asiananda (aka Sebastian Devasiya), but it is good the Indians are taking another look at Jinnah.

``Jinnah lauded, Gandhi assailed
V.N. Datta

Jinnah: A Corrective Reading of Indian History
by Dr Asiananda, Open University Press, New Delhi. Pages XIV+ 438.

The title of the book under review gives the impression that it contains a full-scale biography of Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, but that is not to be. The subtitle of the book suggests that the author’s intention, seemingly laudable, is to set right the distortions that have vitiated and polluted the contents of historical studies. Further, the author claims to offer a vision of the ``building up India of our dreams with non-violence`` and nuclear weapons-free South-East Asia. Peace and stability, he considers, necessary and he thinks that they can only be ensured if nations follow the principles laid down by the United Nations Charter.

The book is dedicated to the ``hollowed memory of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi``. The author has included laudatory comments on his work from the leading public men, diplomats and educationists, including one from the young MP Rahul Gandhi.

The book is essentially about Jinnah and Gandhi. He thinks that a new understanding of Jinnah is needed, which is indeed true. Despite Ayesha Jalah’s scholarly work, Jinnah still awaits a historian......``

Interesting - has its moments. Some parts could need a rewrite but overall not bad.
Pakistan Travelogue I

Romair ``A joint Punjab would have a population larger than any country in Europe(??) The combined population of two Punjabs would be close to 110 million. In fact it would be the 11th most populous country in the world.

In addition, Pakistan Kashmir would join it, since it is basically a Punjabi speaking extension of Pakistani Punjab. Indian Kashmir would join it because of Pakistani Kashmir, and because its traffic routes run solely through Punjab. Who knows maybe Haryana and Hamachal P. would join in also. In which case it would become as populous as Japan........ ``

Amazing but why stop at Haryana..maybe those southern indian states will join as well..after all the prospect of being in the company of better looking, fairer people..cries of balle balle will echo in madras..but then why stop at India..across the seas the island of Sri Punjabanka..

Re: # 249 ``or link all their known nicks in the back end so that whenever they post anything under one of their multi-nicks that interaction or post will appear under all their known nicks...this will render the `ignore` feature on unplugged truly useful ``
And how do we do this? You think people give the same details when registering?

If chowk is starting to remind me of a catholic school with the apple polishers running amok ``miss miss he is saying bad words to me``
It is still a pretty good forum even with the colourful speech. The holier than thou saint is equally guilty of being rude and uncouth to other interactors.

Oh yes bring back Scout...

Its been known to happen. Whether there is an associated M&B moment I don`t know.
I came out and while ammi wishes that I could be one of those ``normal`` boys she still supports me. Abbu is...well he`ll get around. But some are too scared to say anything, arranged marriages can be like tsunamis carrying all before them, so some do get swept away in the tide ruining lives forever.

I still don`t get it. Why is the writer being beat up for his ideological preferences? Knowing his tongue-in-cheek humour he has probably posted the photo to light a fire under your collective bums.

#15 Amit : ``We hindus won`t go that far`` so how do you explain the human sacrifices that still happen in India. OK not on a mass scale but at least 5 or 6 a year. And that western priest who was burnt alive with his sons by hindu fanatics (I am not even mentioning gujrat). So please stop pointing fingers and get rid of that smug satisfaction.

No Mr Ahmed I am not a Hindu..just a member of a minority community and a double minority at that. I still think we are no one to pass judgement on what consitutes `decent`` clothing - its all personal.

TAhmed - oh come on now, perceptions vary. Once can appreciate the human body without sexual connotations. I think you are reading to much into the foot display, the owner of the foot had no objections so why should you?
