Namal University, Another Landmark by ‘Taliban’ Khan
Posted by atif2 Nov 7, 2009 10:32 pm
so it took "taliban" khan to build a world class university in an impoverished area of pakistan, even though enlightened moderate elite had all of 65 years to do the same.

long live imran khan! down down enlightened moderates!

233 (uh, maybe that's what you're discussing, in which case you're discussing the wrong topic.)

damn! U just ruined the punchline (crux) of stuka's painstakingly shat opinion about who gets to decide what. Is this how u repay someone who just days ago called u chowk's arundhati roy ?

Shame on u!

#206 [Which is why the Union Jack flew over Rhodesia till 1977...because Hitler was fighting a rear guard action in Africa.]

hmmm...there is a minor difference between ruling over 400 million people vs 4 million. but i may be wrong on that!

eleventyone [some metrics as you and others have pointed out are the targetting of civilians, the kind of regime that is being rebelled against, the kind of regime that one wants to bring about, etc]

i think you missed the entire point (surprise surprise!). What you stated is obvious, what you didnt state is yet another case of willful ignorance that often afflicts java coders with their head buried in coding loops and syntax.

the discussion that is under discussion is this - WHO develops that criteria? as earlier pointed out, Mandela bhai was fighting white establishment (civilians included). For this reason he was declared a terrorist. The knowledge of "what kind of regime that one wants to bring about" had too many questions. Those who declared Mandela a terrorist had every reason to believe that a black dominated order would be worse off than a white dominated order. To some extent they were right (with all the crime wave and white flight from South Africa). But since the political winds of the world changed, the world embraced a crime ridden south africa over an orderly but apartheid south africa and Mandela was promptly turned into a hero.

In short, developing that cute criteria to judge socio-political movements is not a no-brainer like developing your java code.

DM sahib, your post is an example of what I call "my shit doesnt stink" used by people to justify their terrorist acts

bulleya [....the British left because they were a defeated superpower, but were wise enough to realize that they had no future in India]

exactly! indians and pakis, in their frenzy to prop up jinnah and gandhi, give little credit to Hitler who truly did more than anyone else in giving us the freedom from british yoke. Had he not bombed London relentlessly and killed thousands upon thousands of british soldiers, bringing the country to the brink of starvation and destruction, british would still have had enough power left over to rule India for another 100 years.

brits "granted" us the power in all their newly found "magnanimity" because frankly they were running on dry after WW2
Afia from Karachi Company

loved reading this story. with padash being yet another islooite with awesome sense of humor, it goes to show that there is something in CDA's water that has sharpened wit and humor of us islooites. one more reason to laugh at the rest of pakistan

padash, you mentioned that girls look for F-10 and F-11 boys. What about us E-7 guys? As a long time resident of this sector, i chuckle when i hear boys from F-10 and F-11 bragging about having friends or relatives living in E-7. Or perhaps you didnt mention E-7 because as ambitious as Afia was, even she couldnt dream that high?

in any case, i noticed you are a long time writer on chowk with many previous articles that i havent read. unfortunately, beautiful pieces of writing like these get burried under TNT and india shinning kind of crap. I will print out your previous articles and read them on my long haul flights, instead of smuggling in Playboy magazines and thus risking TSA's interest.

you are finally a reason for me to keep an eye on front page!

generally speaking, whenever BJ Kumar is typing, he is expressing someone else's thoughts

BJ [Too contrived and wordy for my taste!]

Dear BJ Kumar, i realize that "original writing" is never to your taste. one claim about salim's article we can make with 116% certainty - the humor and style and the words and the content of this article by salim are original and his own, and not "leveraged" from someone else. Can we say the same about your "writings"?

hahaha! as expected, this was masterfully crafted and naturally humorous. i must thank delhiwala (this is a first!), for bringing this article to attention on UP.

I have known artists who end up in all kind of hot water for their work. But rarely have I come across one landing in jail just after one click. your devotion and sacrifice just to score a few "awesom!", "beautiful!", "wonderfully captured!" kind of adulations is admirable

one doesnt need to go to Xian in China to find the famed silk road. lying flat on your back in front of Eiffel tower while gazing up with a Nanomatic may just give you the same rise as seeing the actual silk road

hey hey, ho ho, yeh randi rona khatam karo, hey hey, ho ho

seriously hindoos, what is the statue of limitation for randi rona on bombay stuff? hasnt it already been like a month? havent we already had a dozen 500+ interact articles on FP about this topic? Havent we had endless threads on UP about the same shyte? how long will this last? I mean, we pakis mourn our dead one minute and the next minute we are back to fukking with the axis of hindoos and mirzaees, while shaming khatris at the same time.

i tried to break the spell of this randi rona by writing an article about Dubai. Garnered 80 interacts, far better than the 7-interact "travelogue" that kulharee wrote, but still nowhere close to yet another 300+ interact articles about the same bombay shyte?

its only a 150 dead hindoos for godsake! there are a billion more where these 150 came from. its not like we are talking about the poaching of endangered species!

can we put a moratorium on this randi rona, NOW?

shobig #73 [Dubai's history dates back to hardly half a centruy at max. So it was never a tourist attraction for its rich history or indigenous culture.]

shobig payee, you are indeed correct. dubai was never known for its historical aspect. i guess when i mentioned culture, what i had in mind was what i hear from expats from various countries who were near unanimous in their opinion that dubai was a place devoid of its native culture. the only native culture you see in dubai is when a traditionally garbed gentleman offers you kahva at a local hotel, or when you see dhows in the creek or perhaps when you see belly dancers (who are more likely to be russian/ukrainians).

but then again, as you pointed out, people come to dubai to make money. culture along does not put food on the table :) and besides, i wouldnt mind if, say, saudi arabia loses some of its "culture" too, a culture that does not trust women with driving. Not that we in the west trust the women's driving either, but still...

rangeela #74 [Majority of cab drivers are police informers as are the prostitutes and other low-life, the friendly grocery store owner from Kerala or the fatherly Imam sahib of the neighbourhood mosque from Cairo.]

if that is indeed true, then this is the most discrete use of informants i have ever come across. you certainly dont see people speaking in whispers nor do you feel inhibited in your daily interactions. yes, you have to get your luggage through a scanner even when entering UAE, but thats pretty much the extent of it. Unlike in neighboring saudi arabia, and in several other arab countries, you dont come across random and useless check points either.

rangeela #71.72 [I noted a minor error, you name Shaikh maktum as the ruler of Dubai which is wrong.]

when i said "sheikh maktoum" being the ruler of dubai, i should have spelled it out as "sheikh mohammed bin rashid al-maktoum.

but you are correct, it was current ruler's father who was the true visionary and who saw the potential of dubai. also, you seem to have quite a deep and intimate knowledge about the politics of the region. do you happen to live there?

interesting bit about smuggling and the bhattis and the seths you mentioned. another prominent pakistani to have capitalized on UAE rulers' money was Agha Hassan Abadi and his now defunct Bank of Credit and Commerce International. So yeah, these trade and commerce instincts of the UAE rulers are not rooted in the recent construction boom. Rather they go way back.

rf #60 - [ 5. Provide security to all citizens and guests
7. Setup infrastructure and let them come]

of all your suggestions, the above two are the most concrete, practical and to a large extent NOT a non-starter. you cannot build an infrastructure in a lawless society. so security is a must. once you have law and order established, you put infrastructure in place, which subsequently will lead to attracting businesses and setting up transparent business practices to encourage more business.

regarding your suggestion about getting rid of theocracy - iran, a theocratic state, has done an impressive job in developing human capital. you see low end manual labor in dubai from india, pakistan, bangladesh etc, but you dont see an iranian driving cab or working as a manual labor on construction sites. they mostly work as traders, teachers, or at managerial positions.
