[Asking for an answer to "how many angels can dance at the tip of a pin" is certainly not "the right question"....]

Heh heh heh. Um..how about asking "could you describe in a 1000 words the spiritual core of Islam"?

Could you do that, maybe? Or is this also equivalent to "Angels dancing on pins"?

[Re: # 207 Satya, there is no duplicity in what I have been saying ... what we don't seem to appreciate is that there is a 'middle ground'(which perhaps does not exist on this site) ... that there are greys, not just black & white. Its called 'balance' & 'even-handedness' ]

An eminently sane, level-headed, and 50-50 analysis of the situation. Bravo! You obviously are an enlightened person, with superior ideals, and to sum it up, just superior to these common folks with bigoted, hateful and animal instincts. In short, a true intellectual (regardless of your test scores in High School or College), if I may say so.

Just the kind of person one can carry on a civilized and "meaningful" conversation with.

By the way, when do you think the "talibanization" of Muslims started, in History. And an unrelated question - why do you think the number of Hindus keep decreasing in Bangladesh and Pakistan, for example.

Oh, a third question - would you put Gandhi in the "blindly hateful and bigoted" category from the following quote from him (he obviously had far more first-hand interactions with Muslims than either you or me):

There is no doubt in my mind that in the majority of quarrels the Hindus come out second best. But my own experience confirms the opinion that the Mussalman as a rule is a bully, and the Hindu as a rule is a coward. I have noticed this in railway trains, on public roads, and in the quarrels which I had the privilege of settling. Need the Hindu blame the Mussalman for his cowardice? Where there are cowards, there will always be bullies. They say that in Saharanpur the Mussalmans looted houses, broke open safes and, in one case, a Hindu woman's modesty was outraged. Whose fault was this? Mussalmans can offer no defence for the execrable conduct, it is true. But I, as a Hindu, am more ashamed of Hindu cowardice than I am angry at the Mussalman bullying. Why did not the owners of the houses looted die in the attempt to defend their possessions? Where were the relatives of the outraged sister at the time of the outrage? Have they no account to render of themselves? My non-violence does not admit of running away from danger and leaving dear ones unprotected. Between violence and cowardly flight, I can only prefer violence to cowardice.

with regards,

Ajeya

[I am sure if you ponder the verses of the Quran in question, your arrow will arrive at the correct conclusion.]

Whether my "arrow" will "arrive at the correct conclusion" or not, the fact remains that like a true Muslim, who really has no answers when asked the right questions, you are unable to provide any direct answers.

So much for all your intellectualizing about Islam.

[In the meantime look at other winged creatures that deliver messages as analogies to the not so well understood nor so visible angels, that lurk behind the mystery of the brain/cosmos connection..]

Hmm... Very intriguing. You are forcing me to think, which is not easy for a non-muslim. Um..are you saying that the "message" was delivered to Muhammad 's brain via the "brain/cosmos connection", and the winged apparition was kind of like a holographic medium that Allah (the dude pulling all the levers) was using to transmit these precious "messages" (like the chapter called "The Cow") to his "Chosen One"?

Or am I divining your response wrongly? You have to excuse people like me who are much more cerebrally-challenged than yourself. If you insist on testing my mental mettle with these cryptic answers, then naturally I have no choice but to flounder and grope at answers. But I am trying my best.

Hey masadi, I had a question. Other than Gabriel, how many other winged angels are there zooming around? Did muhammad meet any angel other than Gabby? Or was Gabby the only one he met?

I ask you this because you are obviously a deeply intellectual (and thus brainy) person. As all true Muslims really are.

[Why do non-brahmin hindus put up with this implied insult to their heritage by "being offered a chance to become brahmin" is beyond me!! ]

Why don't you quit all this brahmin-research and concentrate instead on the pedophile-conjured "message", especially the ones about cutting off opposing hands and feet, and raping innocent war-booty?

Guru,

Hindus do not need to defend Hinduism. Because we are not trying to convert Muslims. What happens within Hinduism does not affect them.

Muslims are the ones trying to aggressively convert people of other religions. So we Hindus DO have a right to question what they are selling.

[Although, believers have found a way out of that impasse, so credibility is not logically necessary to them any more. Believers believe that the Quran or the Message itself is so perfect that you just think long and hard enough and very REALLY honest and sincere, you will see the perfection and the miracle that the Quran is. That proves Islam is true.]

Yes. I know. Some Christian "believers" were using the same arguments about two potato fries that had gotten stuck in the shape of a cross.

[A religion makes no sense if there is no human way to really know what it actually says to humans. That's why the Prophet's life and character become crucial.]

There is a much more fundamental reason why the "prophet's" life and character become crucial. It has to do with credibility. For people to accept the Koran as the word of god, they HAVE to believe that the "prophet" was not lying through his teeth about having conversations with winged creatures in a cave. Because if he was lying about that (as he obviously was), then the very foundation of Islam is made of vapor. One should not even have to argue about the absurdity of his story which was only acceptable to people in the old days (and even some people today), but even if one does, then one has to look at his lack of moral character, his perverted actions and tendencies, his numerous war crimes and all his monstrous acts, and realize that his fabrications were just a means of grabbing power for himself, and all the ill-gotten booty he could lay his hands on.

[#197 eklavya/dost mittar #198: agreed based on the discussion below that the concept of "syeds" would have arisen anyway as a result of the steady corruption of the original message of islam over the centuries.]

Which original message? The one about cutting off opposite hand and feet, or the one about how it's okay to rape slave women "that your right hand holds"?

It might come as a shock to the Abrahamic mindset, but as I've often said before, we Hindus don't give a damn about "converting" other people. Because the concept of "converting" is idiotic. I quoted the Balochistan article to show how some balochs feel about Pakiland, and to give Tahmed a bad night.

It is interesting, though, how this has elicited such an immediate gut-level response from the pedo-worshippers, as opposed to all my other posts - which is really what I am talking about. Kind of tells you how the Abrahamic mind works.

And Eklavya, I think you should quit making your asinine statements. If you are aiming at subtlety, you should remember that you are dealing with inbred Pakis - Tahmed for example has been having multiple orgasms over your posts about how minorities are treated so well in Saudi Arabia, for example. Biting sarcasm (if it is indeed so) does not work if the intended audience does not get it. And if it is not sarcasm, then it is even more asinine. So quit while you are behind.

Baloch Freedom in 10 Steps: Reconversion to Hinduism or Zoroastrianism

by Mazaar Bugti
Posted: Apr 10, 2008 3:33 AM

It is true that the area of Balochistan was Zoroastrian/Hindu/Buddhist originally and had to convert to Islam under Islamic military invasions. It is easy to convert weak and conquered people under threat of sword. I would not like to say anything against Islam, but the global perception of Islam is poor, third-rate and inferior, and it can be realized only when Islamic people would travel to different places globally (This cannot be experienced by just staying or exposure in an Islamic majority place). Wherever there are multiple religions present in good proportions, it is always the Islamic populace that creates problems, be it India, S.Thailand, S.Phillipines, Europe, USA. This is however different in Islamic majority countries, but problems are created there as well by the Muslim citizens. The Islam religion itself is such that it has to reassure itself of its existence at all times, lest it dies out.

Any Islamic people's observations that Islam is good, are normal and as per expectations, as Islam completely brainwashes its followers and eradicates the sense of history, heritage, and local culture like a erase-and-restart button. And over many generations it completely gets lost. There is a huge majority in Iran who cannot relate to their rich history just because of this, and unfortunately they cannot reconvert back to Zoroastrianism because of Islam's apostasy laws. Even Islamic Art and Architecture style was practically stolen from Zoroastrian Persia, not created in original by the horse-riding sword-yielding nomadic Arabs. Islamic people's comments that people converted to Islam because of its beauty and strength is completely false, as the very first conversions of Rajputs in 1011 AD in Kashmir, took place under the sword, and naturally close family members will follow suit not to prevent breakups. Consequently Islam also brainwashes its followers for proselytizing, and it is easy to sell it particularly to the illiterate poor people and give them hope and dreams. The rich Hindu/Buddhist people from the north of subcontinent migrated deeper east or south. This is one of the reason why Islamic countries everywhere are so poor (oil in some countries will last just another few decades).

There are also divisions in Islam such as Shia, Sunni, Ashraf, Ajlaf, Mohajir, Balochi, Sindhi etc. Balochistan definitely is dominated by the Punjabi Muslims as we read daily everywhere. It is because of this, that Balochistan should leave Islam and reconvert to Hinduism en-masse together and it will be very easy to integrate with the world and get assistance from all sorts of cultures (India, Japan, EU, USA etc). There is hardly any doubt that India, Japan, EU, USA would not come to Balochistan's help once they reconvert to Hinduism. However, if they convert to Christianity or Judaism, then they will be just treated as People of the Book in Pakistan and there will no change in any status. Basically Pakistan will absorb the shock and in coming decades, it will start persecuting Balochis even more. It is only when they convert to Hinduism or Zoroastrianism will Pakistan feel an aversion and distance that will make it easy for Balochistan to become independent. It is this gross aversion that Balochi should take advantage of. The Pakistanis cannot turn an entire Hindu population into dhimmis. As it has practically been abolished now. However, if they convert to Christianity or Judaism, they will be absorbed as 'junior lesser brothers'.

Now, with India's economic might and military strength, and as an Asian superpower, India would defintely come to help for Balochistan. Pakistan will not dare to attempt any untoward incident with India. It will also be very natural for India to help their Hindu or Zoroastrian brothers in the new Republic of Balochistan. Please note that it is only 'Republic of Balochistan' and not 'Hindu Republic of Balochistan' or 'Zoroastrian Republic of Balochistan'. This is because both Hinduism and Zoroastrianism are very ancient mature Aryan religions and exist only as a way of life without interfering in the politics of governance.

Detailed Process of Reconversion to Hinduism or Zoroastrianism

Balochi leaders should start the process of "reconversion" (going back to religion of origin) immediately. The steps are as follows:

Step-1: Political Initiation
This has to be done in full and absolute secrecy. Highly prominent Balochi Sardars and political leaders must analyze the logic in a cool mind and in full practicality. They should realize that peaceful freedom for Balochistan lies only through reconversion to Hinduism or Zoroastrianism. This can be done by Balochi Sardars getting in touch with prominent Indian Hindu politicians, and influential Zoroastrian (Parsi) people such as military generals or lawyers in India. This should also be done with Iranian Zoroastrian leaders. Also appropriate Indian intelligence agencies should be contacted for full assistance. This has to be done in full and absolute secrecy.
Time period: Start from year 0 and duration of 1-2 years

Step-2: Selection of emissaries
The highly prominent Balochi Sardars and political leaders should now select a handful of influential and well-known yet broad-minded imams/mullahs who have been convinced that freedom for Balochistan lies only through reconversion to Hinduism or Zoroastrianism. These imams/mullahs should act Islamic on the outward but inside they should have developed a deep belief in Hinduism or Zoroastrianism and its relation to Balochi freedom. They also should maintain an Islamic appearance such as beard, dress to appear normal. It is of utmost importance that these imams/mullahs should maintain their secrecy and thus their lives. The highly prominent Balochi Sardars and political leaders should also keep an eye for any betrayal at this stage.
Time period: Start from year 1 and duration of 2-3 years

Step-3: Sending emissaries to India/Iran
After having examined the trust of the imams/mullahs, the Balochi Sardars and political leaders should start sending them as emissaries to prominent places only in India (Varanasi, Kashi, etc for Hinduism and Navsari, Mumbai etc for Zoroastrianism). However, their travel should be disguised as if they are traveling for a Hajj. The emissaries should not go to Iran now as they might be executed because of the Islamic laws there. Once they enter India the imams/mullahs should change their appearance as normal Hindus or Parsis (Zoroastrians) with adopted Hindu or Parsi names. They should visit appropriate places to deeply learn the religions of Hinduism and Zoroastrianism. This study should not get diverted to a religious study and the main goal of freedom for Balochistan should remain as the intention. In this stage, it is taken for granted that the emissaries will be under the protection of the Indian intelligence agencies and other Hindu or Parsi religious groups who have already been taken under confidence.
Time period: Start from year 3 and duration of 2-3 years

Step-4: Conversion of emissaries in India/Iran
The Balochi emissaries in India should now convert themselves into Hinduism or Zoroastrianism in absolute secrecy. This is something like throwing away the yokes of Islam in a true manner from deep inside the mind and heart, with the clear intention of freedom for Baloch in their mind. During this time in India, they can also secretly invite to India other junior imams/mullahs to initiate the process of conversion to Hinduism or Zoroastrianism, but it must be done in full secrecy. Thus, the hierarchy is now clear: in the First Level: Balochi Sardars and political leaders; in the Second Level: influential senior imams/mullahs; in the Third Level: junior imams/mullahs.
Time period: Start from year 5 and duration of 2 years

Step-5: Coming back of emissaries to Balochistan
The senior and junior emissaries, with their burning desire for freedom for Balochistan and their mind and heart converted to Hinduism or Zoroastrianism, must now be recalled back to Balochistan. Once again they should maintain an Islamic appearance such as beard, dress to appear normal. They should now sit with the respected highly prominent Balochi Sardars and political leaders who are now already Hindu or Parsi in their minds and hearts, and Islamic only in their outward appearance. They should now carefully decide on the plan on when to declare the conversion of Balochistan to Hinduism and Zoroastrianism. The conversion should not be gradual. It has to be sudden with immediate mass conversions, sticking to it adamantly, and propagating the conversion through entire Balochistan. It has to be something like 'Blitzconversion' just like Blitzkreig. Such as declaring it on the eve of the first day of Hindu New Year or Zoroastrian New Year.
Time period: Start from year 7 and declare reconversion within 1 year

Step-6: Preparation for Declaration of Reconversion to Original Religion of Hinduism and Zoroastrianism
The highly prominent Balochi Sardars and political leaders and the converted imams/mullahs after fixing the date must not disclose it to anyone. They should keep themselves fully protected lest the word goes out. A week before the date, the highly prominent Balochi Sardars and political leaders should undergo a photo-video-session showing the conversion ceremony done by a Hindu Brahmin priest or a Zoroastrian Mobed. The photos/videos should show the Balochi Sardars and political leaders worshipping a Hindu god or worshipping Fire according to Hindu or Parsi tradition. This Hindu Brahmin priest or Zoroastrian Moeb should be from among the emissaries discussed earlier. The photographs/videos must be kept ready but under full secrecy. During this time, the Balochi Sardars and political leaders should secretly prepare strong and eloquent speeches, which will influence the general population.

Step-7: Day of Declaration of Reconversion to Hinduism and Zoroastrianism
Part A: Day 1: Declaration by the politicians: On the selected date strong announcements must be broadcasted through all medias, such as local newspapers, radio, TV etc. These announcements should include the speeches from the highly prominent Balochi Sardars and political leaders, and also carry their photographs giving the speech. It should also be accompanied by photos/videos of their conversion ceremony. They should also announce their new Hindu or Parsi names, such as Raja Saheb Shena or Pasha Ardeshir Umrigar etc.
On this day, the Balochi Sardars and political leaders must ask his second level political leaders to follow suit and convert. Since Baloch society is based on a strong clan-like heirarchy, it is easy to convert the people. The second-level Balochi Sardars and political leaders must now spread the word to all the people of Angaria, Baloch, Barija, Bhutani, Bhutta, Bizenjo, Brahmani, Bugti, Buledi, Burfat, Buzdar, Domki, Jadgal, Gabol, Gichki, Gola, Hasni, Hoti, Jam, Jamali, Jamoot, Jamote, Jattak, Kalmati, Kalpar, Kansi, Khetran, Khosa, Kolachi, Lari, Lashari, Lasi, Leghari, Magsi, Marri, Masuri, Mengal, Nausherwani, Nothazai, Regi, Rahija Raisani, Rind, Sanjrani, Sasooli, Shambhani, Talpur, Umrani, Wadhela, Zardari.
Part B: Day 2: Declaration by the religious clergy: One day after the announcements by the Balochi Sardars and political leaders, the emissary imams/mullahs must declare their conversions too. They should also send out photos/videos of wearing ancient Hindu or Parsi ceremonial costumes and worshipping a Hindu god or worshipping Fire according to Hindu or Parsi tradition. They should also declare their new names such as Pandit Prashant Devasharmana or Mobed Pallonjee Hormusjee Marzban. This message will fortify the announcement done in the previous day and will have a strong impact on the general population.
This is something like the domino effect. All the domino arrangements are first prepared in full secrecy and then on the selected day the first domino is moved so that the Blitzconversion happens!

Step-8: Immediately After Declaration of Reconversion to Hinduism and Zoroastrianism
The Balochi Sardars and political leaders, of whom some are Members of the Pakistani National Assembly, should now declare their mass conversion in the National Assembly in Islamabad, and ask the other MPs to refer them by their new Hindu or Parsi names. No doubt, there will be a severe uproar. They could be called Hindu infidels, Indian agent, Parsi kafir, etc. This has to be taken in stride but full security should be taken by the Balochi Sardars and political leaders, lest they be assassinated.
In the meantime, the process of conversion to Hinduism and Zoroastrianism should be propagated in Balochistan with a lightning speed. Any violence or betrayal should be sorted out by talks, failing which strong force maybe used secretly. It maybe noted that this force is ultimately essential to create an aversion in the Punjabi Pakistani mind and for a free Balochistan, and is not a religion-based force (such as the sword in Islam).
It is well-known, that the Balochi Sardars and political leaders are very powerful in their land and are also respectable men of honor, such as the Rajputs. There is no doubt that they will maintain their conversion and will see that their populace also follow it. During this time there maybe attacks from Muslim Punjabi terrorists on Balochi population as well as Balochi Sardars and political leaders. Thus, they should be prepared for their safety.
There is also no doubt that this will create headlines across the whole world and will be shaking news. There are also possibilities, that some Islamic countries may come with large economic aid and money, and approach the Balochi Sardars and political leaders, in return for coming back to Islam. In such cases, Balochi Sardars and political leaders, may decide through their code of honor whether to take this money and remain suppressed under Muslim Punjabi Pakistan, or see a free Republic of Balochistan.

Step-9: 6 Months After Declaration of Reconversion to Hinduism and Zoroastrianism
Slowly, within a period of 6 months from the Day of Declaration of Reconversion, stability will set in. The Balochi population will start identifying themselves with two great ancient religions and feel themselves closer to other powerful ancient Asian cultures such as India, Japan and China. When Balochi Sardars and political leaders travel to other countries, they will be welcomed with great respect, and thus can ask for assured economic aid from many countries. It maybe noted that people with Islamic names have problems traveling to other non-Islamic countries and are always looked down upon.

Step-10: 1 Year After Declaration & Development of Baloch Society
Any real progress will not be possible just by conversion of religion. It is well known that in Hindu or Zoroastrian society education plays a great role and helps develop the art, culture, economy. It is completely different from the Islamic education style, where madrassas just cram students with a foreign Arabic tongue, and teach them the Quran, which does not help them in earning any money. For many thousands of years, Hindu or Zoroastrian society has always been free of such religion-centered studies, which is evident from the Ayurveda, Natya Shashtra etc of India, and the Art, Architecture & Desert Engineering of Zoroastrian Persia. Islamic Iran could never develop such feats of Engineering as was achieved under Zoroastrian Persia. Additionally, in Hindu or Zoroastrian society, there is tremendous freedom to do anything that one likes and to develop entrepreneurship. Ultimately, what everyone wants is a good quality of life, pleasure, and a sense of freedom to enjoy life! It is a Hindu or Zoroastrian society that can create such a favorable environment in Balochistan. Hence, if the Balochi Sardars and political leaders maintain a Hindu or Zoroastrian society, not only will economic progress follow, but will also attain eventual freedom from Muslim Punjabi Pakistan, as a secular democratic Republic of Balochistan.

I thus feel that a reconversion towards Hinduism or Zoroastrianism would be the best and practical idea for a free secular democratic Republic of Balochistan, and for Balochi people to attain great heights economically and spiritually.

Plight of Hindus in Sindh and Balochistan

Author: Khaled Ahmed
Publication: The Friday Times
Date: May 14-20, 2004

We don't know much about Hindus living in Sindh and Balochistan. Because the mainstream media remain silent we don't get to know about their real plight. The TV channels in the private sector should focus on these forgotten communities

The Commission sent a team to the province, which observed the Hindus of Kalat, Mastung, Machh and Kolpur and discovered that the Baloch and Brahui tribes kept them to do jobs (musicians, carpenters, merchants) considered below their honour by the Muslims. The author noted that Hindus were visible in Baloch areas but were scarce in the Pakhtun areas although in 1941 most of the 54,000 Hindus of Balochistan lived in the Pakhtun areas. After 1947, the Hindus in the Pakhtun areas declined by 93 percent but only by 11 percent in the Baloch areas. Now Balochistan had 27,000 Hindus in all,

The incidents of atrocities and caste-based discriminations on Dalits are increasing day by day in Tharparkar - a district where 35 per cent people belong to different Dalit communities among a million people - because of growing awareness and assertiveness of the Dalits. Several hundred Dalit employees of low-caste communities were transferred to far-flung areas under different obnoxious pretexts. Cases were initiated against the Dalit political activists. Their rural folks were threatened and even disallowed to graze their livestock on government lands called Gauchar.

Speaking on Geo TV (25 March 2004) federal education minister Zubaida Jalal said that she had grown up reading the same (biased) textbooks and that Pakistan had not been harmed by them. She said the Hindus of Balochistan and Sindh had not suffered because of these textbooks.

There is very little information about the minorities in Pakistan, which are 5 percent of the total population and are remembered in the flag of Pakistan by the white stripe. While Christians have highlighted their problems in Punjab, very little is known about the Hindus of Balochistan. Scheduled caste (Shudra) and Untouchable (Dalit) Hindus in Sindh have been hit by the double whammy of ill-treatment at the hands of the Muslim feudal lords and the upper caste Hindus. They have also been targeted at times by the intelligence agencies because they live close to the Indian border in Tharparkar and are suspected of spying for India. Bheels and Kolis, untouchables or Dalits, have been in the news for bonded labour.

In Balochistan, Hindus were 22 percent of the population in 1941; today they are only 1.6 percent, according to the 1998 census report, which may be 27,000 Hindus in all. After 1947, their exodus from the Pakhtun areas of Balochistan was considerable while they tended to stay in the Baloch areas. The exodus was the characteristic of the entire population of Hindus and Sikhs in Pakistan. There was a tendency among the lower caste Hindus not to migrate. The pattern of settlement today is such that Sindhi-speaking Hindus live in the Baloch areas bordering Sindh while further West near Quetta and the region called Jhalawan the Seraiki-speaking Hindus call themselves Punjabi.

Hindus in Balochistan: The latest facts about the Hindu community in Balochistan have come to light in a report by Minority Rights Commission of Pakistan titled Religious Tolerance in Balochistan: Myth and Reality (2003) by Akram Mirani.

In Kalat there are seven Hindu temples but the Hindu streets are separate from Muslim streets. There are even two Hindu doctors in Kalat. The only Brahman in town is Maharaj Roshan Sharma in charge of the Shiv Mandar there. Hindu merchants still control the wholesale trade of the area. But in 1992, after the Babri mosque incident in India, it was the Pakhtun community who intruded and subjected the Hindus to violence. The police in Balochistan is hardly organised. It keeps no record of violence against the minorities and is barred from operating anywhere outside the province's major cities. Conditions have been bad in the Pakhtun areas of Balochistan.

Anti-Hindu violence in Balochistan: The Friday Timesreported in its issue of March 23-29, 2001, as follows: 'Hundreds of Hindus have been forced to flee their homes and cross over into Sindh. Three Hindus were reported to have been killed in the town of Chaman after clashes between Hindus attempting to protect their homes and Muslim mobs in October. Temples and homes were set ablaze and property, including Hindu shops, destroyed as the growing social intolerance assumed alarming new proportions in Balochistan. In all cases, local extremist groups played a role in triggering the attacks.

'Though the precise number of families which fled was unknown, reports suggested almost half the community of 10,000 Hindus in Lasbela had been forced to leave their homes over the year. In almost all cases, the increased activism by militant religious groups imposed new strains on relations between the majority Muslim and the Hindu communities, who had lived peacefully alongside each other for many decades. The efforts to forcibly convert the Hindus, especially female school students, had a direct role to play in violence against Hindu settlements. At least five Hindu temples were vandalised over the year, with their structures damaged and the idols and other objects of worship broken. Amidst the uproar caused by the conversion issue in Lasbela, activists of religious parties launched an assault on two old Hindu temples and threw to the ground the idols placed in them.'

At the time of partition, when sectarian riots ravaged the subcontinent, the Hindu population of Balochistan remained unharmed, mainly due to two factors. First, the major portion of Balochistan native/princely Balochistan where majority of Hindus lived was under the Khan of Kalat, the chief ruler of Kalat state, Yar Mohammad Khan, who respected indigenousness of the Hindu community. He had assured them of economic and religious freedom in case they decided to continue living in Balochistan. Second, reciprocity of mutual relationship between Muslims and Hindus, and prosperity in business encouraged them to abandon the idea of migrating to India. They live in Quetta, Kalat, Sibi, Mastung, Dahdar, Duki, Dalbandin, Chaman, and Gandawa. In Gandawa, a tiny town and newly raised headquarter of Jhall-Magsi district, they have a big temple, which is claimed to be the fifth largest Hindu temple in the subcontinent. They dwell in their own little colonies, usually not away from their temples. They belong to business class, without any major interest in education and government offices. Some of them are wealthy merchants owning large jewellery and general stores, but the majority is of middle and lower middle class businessmen with their shops/stores in the bazaars of various towns.

Plight of Hindus of Sindh: Newsline(Dec 2000), pages 77-79, stated that 'the status of the 2.7 million Hindus in Pakistan, who are largely concentrated in Sindh, does not make for a very encouraging picture. Despite the fact that the Hindus in Pakistan have generally maintained a low profile, the general attitude towards them is one of suspicion. A case in point: the editor of a Sindhi newspaper demanded a car from a Hindu businessman. When he refused the former wrote an editorial in his paper declaring that the gentleman was a RAW agent who had been supplying weapons to terrorists in the country. In another incident in Hyderabad in September, Ashok Kumar, a Hindu inspector of the Income Tax Department, along with the army monitoring team went to Sadar to collect tax return forms from shop owners. Instead of complying with the authorities, one of the shop-owners alleged that the Hindu inspector had threatened to grab him by his beard if he did not give him the form. Within no time the shopkeeper managed to muster a group of his colleagues, who shuttered their shops and took out a procession demanding that the government hand them the Hindu so that they "could teach him a lesson." There followed a two-day strike in the city, as a result of which Ashok Kumar was not only suspended from his job, but also jailed after a case of 'blasphemy' was registered against him.

'Hindus in Pakistan have faced the greatest trials when there has been tension between India and Pakistan. Says an analyst, "From the first Indo-Pak war to the demolition of the Babri mosque in Ayodhya, Hindus in Pakistan have been perceived as enemies and persecuted." Kidnapping, extortion, and even killing are, meanwhile, common crimes perpetrated against Hindus in Sindh today. In September this year, Dr. Kanaya Lal, a Hindu eye specialist, was kidnapped from Larkana from the heart of the town. He was released after one week following a ransom payment of 5 lakh rupees (500,000 rupees). Another Hindu, Dr, Darshan Lal, was killed in Badah town in Larkana when he offered resistance to dacoits who were attempting to kidnap him from his house. At least four Hindu have been kidnapped from Sukkur during the last two months, and remain in the custody of the dacoits who have demanded hefty amounts of ransom for their release. 'Many Hindus pay regular sums as 'bhatta' to different groups of extortionists merely in order to be aloud to live in peace. Pak Autos, an automobile outlet belonging to a local Hindu trader in Larkana, was torched a couple of months ago when he refused to cough up the sum demanded by activists of a political party. Another Hindu businessman disclosed that he had received a call at his Karachi residence a few months ago from an activist of a Sindh nationalist party who demanded the payment of a sizeable sum from him. He tracked down the number the caller had phoned from and discovered it belonged to an agency. When he contacted the authorities and gave them this information, he was not only refused help, he was told that "the activists of different groups are important to the establishment, while the Hindus are of no use," thereby implying that he should not expect any assistance. Says the businessman "Instead of concentrating on business, most Hindus in Pakistan are expending their energies in developing their PR with the authorities and entertaining various influentials to try and build up a support base for themselves."

Dalits of Sindh want justice: The Scheduled Castes Federation of Pakistan has a website http://petitiononline.com/scfp2003/petition.html which addresses a petition to the President of Pakistan asking for a redressal of the plight of the Dalits. It a flattering website as it talks more about Islam than about Hinduism.

'In Pakistan, the Dalits face different issues. Since they are part of a tiny minority that is 5 per cent of country's total population, and due to also lack of education and literacy, they continue to stick to different forms of Hinduism whatever their half-literate Gurus impart them. Caste Hindus continue their domination only in southern part of Pakistan, especially former Mirpurkhas division, where more than one million Dalits dwell as landless peasants and labourers. The Caste Hindus, though small in numbers, dominate the minority politics through support of their convert relatives and government functionaries. The incidents of atrocities and caste-based discriminations on Dalits are increasing day by day in Tharparkar - a district where 35 per cent people belong to different Dal it communities among a million people - because of growing awareness and assertiveness of the Dalits. Several hundred Dalit employees of Dalit communities were transferred to far-flung areas under different obnoxious pretexts. Cases were initiated against the Dalit political activists. Their rural folks were threatened and even disallowed to graze their livestock on government lands called Gauchar.

'Dalits also suffer in many instances from de facto disenfranchisement. During elections 2002, those unpersuaded by typical electioneering were routinely threatened and beaten by a pro-government political party strongmen in order to compel them to vote for certain candidates. Already under the thumb of local landlords and police officials, Dalit villagers who do not comply had been victimized, beaten, and harassed. In Tharparkar, violence against Dalits is normally treated as a very minor and marginal issue, even by the law-enforcement machinery, whether be it police, the prosecution, or the medico-legal fraternity or often even the judiciary. Non-registration of crimes against Dalits is one of the main problem in Tharparkar. Political influence over the police, and caste, class, religion and gender biases are rampant. It is extremely difficult for helpless Dalits to file complaints, particularly against the powerful individuals and or perpetrators. The theft of livestock of Dalits in Tharparkar is rampant as police never registers any such case. These are very few examples as to how Dalits are dealt with if they display an act to show equality. Hundreds of the incidents of caste discrimination go unreported.'

[alaksh, OK, how about anonymous fora like Chowk. We are lucky to have non-Muslim friends from our friendly neighborhood Pakistan :)]

In our friendly neighbourhood pakistan, ISP's can be "coaxed" to hand over names and addresses. Did you ever think of that?

[Seriously, how many of them are totally miserable, unhappy, and eternally angry with their Muslim brothers?]

I would suggest most of them. Otherwise why do they leave - look at their dwindling numbers.

[More to the point, which non-Muslim Pakistani friend -

(1) questions Pakistani nationalism, in fact all nationalisms?

(2) Suggests Islam be removed from public and political life?

(3) seems constantly in religious pain?]

This could be because they don't have the concept of a "ummah" like Muslims, and thus loyal to whatever country they live in. Unlike Muslims. Do you see other religions have these meetings like these endless meetings of Muslim countries?

[Had there been the kind of religious oppression and discrimination in Pakistan that we know exists (even if we don't acknowledge, obviously) in India, would we not see any of the above?]

You would, if the fear of reprisal was not so great. The fear is all-pervasive. The fear is so complete that even moderate muslims live under the shadow of fear. I was once talking to a Hindu from Bangladesh. He told me that he was safe in his own motherland "depending on where and when", but liberal Muslims were even less safe than him, because they are vocal, and often on television. I have heard even Muslims on Chowk complaining about their fear.

[ananth bhai, I do have a terrible sense of humor, but there are real problems here and we need to make some changes... ]

But I do agree with you - we definitely need to make changes. Our Hindu society needs to become more like Islamic societies everywhere - complaints will decrease at a rapid rate, and there will be more compliance. Have we heard a peep from any Hindu in Pakiland after many Hindu temples were demolished in Pakiland in the wake of the Ayodhya Temple incident? Islam does provide instruments for total compliance, and thus, peace of a sort. It's time we use these same principles. Look at Saudi Arabia - NO complaints from non-Muslims at all. Ever. Peace reigns supreme. I am hoping that the right-wing parties like the BJP can take a page out of Islam in this regard. But I am not very confident that it will work with the "indic" psyche.
