Race to the Finish

Re: # 356

[Survival is easy. Cockroaches survive too. Survival with honor needs original thoughts, strategy to implement your objectives and organizational skills to get the job done]

Pardesi, thanks for the “sirdarjis are the greatest thing since daal-makhni!” pep talk!

I agree that sirdarjis are as fully capable of conducting “intellectual” mumbo-jumbo as anybody else.

The fact that they do not do so (or rarely do so) is probably because they prefer to be karam-yogis instead – or that’s how I see it any way.

Now I must return to my hole – like the cockroach that I am…

Strictly driven by a sense of survival, of course! :)

And yes, some of the most creative output occurs when the "artist" does not have to worry about when the next check will be coming in to pay the pile of bills. That is why the countless court musicians, court artists and court writers have thrived while the lonely romantic artists have had to starve.

Bhookhey bhajan na hoheeN, Gopala!

Re: # 309

[… you are not implying that Sikhs are somehow, as a group, less likely to articulate great thoughts!!]

Eklavya, a Manmohan Singh here and a Khushwant Singh there are merely the exceptions which prove the rule. There is little doubt that Sirdarjis are perhaps the most adaptable folks within India and have proven the ability to survive and become successful anywhere! But how many of my dear sirdarjis (perhaps my dear Jang excepted) have conducted the vivisection of Freudian thought processes?!

And BTW, I did not use the term “great” thoughts – I said “intellectual” thoughts as understood in chowk parlance. Such signs of “intellect” are not always necessarily reasons to be jubiliant.

Of course, I claim no expertise on that and related matters.

Re: # 240

Ajeya, the ability to survive is different from the ability to excel academically and do other types of stuff that “smart” individuals are associated with. Survival requires the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.

When the hordes of Nadirshah attacked the Somnath temple, who were the “smarter” folks? The men with weapons, or the pandits and scholars?

And who survived?

The Jewish folks traveled all over the world as refugees – and enriched so many countries. They thrived wherever they got the opportunity to exist in peace and practice whatever trades and crafts and intellectual pursuits they undertook. Yet, when the push came to shove – the vast hordes of the not-so-intelligent ones victimized them in each of those countries (eventually forcing them to seek an Israel).

The Jewish folks were decimated in large numbers – inspite of their undeniable superior intellect!

One possible explanation could be that the very characteristics which make intelligence valuable – the originality of thoughts, uniqueness, lack of fear from straying from the beaten track, etc. – make it very difficult for such people to become an organized lot, which is necessary for survival and winning conflicts.

The ancient men were no match for the predators of their times until they learnt to hunt in teams and when they did, there was no looking back.

Survival is more like a team sport – intellectual accomplishments are individual sports.

In India, sirdarjis are the most versatile people and they have shown a remarkable ability to survive under all conditions – within India and outside. However, how many sirdarjis have shown the ability to articulate great intellectual thoughts (our very own Jang being the exception, of course!) And don’t mention Khushwant Singh – his specialty is sex!

Kulharee, Jackie Gleason was an Irish American actor from New York who (among other things) became famous for portraying the character of Ralph Kramden, New York City bus driver, in the early TV series entitled The Honeymooners.

Arjun_5, since you are so hard on the Pakistani souls here, who - being bhoala-bhala, are unable to defend themselves, let me - as a gesture of charity and with the desire to create harmony, post the following text from a site called (what else!) "cousincouples.com"!

--------------------

Some people are fixated on the fallacy that cousin couples pose an intolerable risk to their offspring. However it is likely that we are all descendants of cousin marriages. Before civil laws banning cousin marriages, it was preferable to marry a cousin in some communities as it is to this day in many countries. The notion “why marry a stranger" is just as prevalent in many countries as the cousin marriage taboo in America today.

There is a wide range of opinions on the subject of cousin marriages. This is fuelled by erroneous information, bigotry, and presumptions. Further we have civil laws and religious creeds based on obsolete information.

The facts about cousin marriages are much clearer.

There are no contemporary studies that indicate cousins have children with significantly higher than normal birth defects. Fears of cousins who marry having children with birth defects are indeed exaggerated. Simply marrying within your own race increases the odds of birth defects. Marrying within your own town further increases your chances. Cousin couples have only a slightly higher incidence of birth defects than non-related couples.

Fact: 26 states allow first cousin marriages; Most people can marry their cousin in the US.

Fact: US prohibitions against cousin marriages predate modern genetics.

Fact: In the first quarter of 2000, two delegates in Maryland introduced a bill that would prohibit first cousin marriage. This bill passed in the House of Delegates (82 to 46), however did not make it past the Senate Committee. ....The sponsors of the bill claim that a large ratio of out-of-state couples come to Maryland to get married – perhaps cousin couples. Their bill would have stifled revenues from marriage licenses while imposing ...marriage restrictions.

Fact: No European country prohibits marriage between first cousins. It is also legal throughout Canada and Mexico to marry your cousin. The USA is the only western country with cousin marriage restrictions.

Fact: Children of non-related couples have a 2-3% risk of birth defects, as opposed to first cousins having a 4-6% risk. Genetic counseling is available for those couples that may be at a special risk for birth defects (e.g. You have a defect that runs in your family) In plain terms first cousins have at a 94 percent + chance of having healthy children. Check the links section for more information on genetic counselors. The National Society of Genetic Counselors estimated the increased risk for first cousins is between 1.7 to 2.8 percent, or about the same a any woman over 40 years of age.

Fact: Second cousins have little, if any increased chance of having children with birth defects, per the book "Clinical Genetics Handbook”– courtesy of the March of Dimes.

Fact: The frequency of cousin marriages in the USA is about 1 in 1,000

Fact: The frequency of cousin marriages in Japan is about 4 in 1,000

Fact: It is estimated that 20 percent of all couples worldwide are first cousins. It is also estimated that 80 percent of all marriages historically have been between first cousins!

Fact: In some cultures, the term cousin and mate are synonymous.

Fact: The range of consanguinity in Saudi Arabia is between 34 to 80+ percent. A study has been done on birth defects resulting from consanguineous marriages in this country....

Fact: Albert Einstein married his first cousin. And so did Charles Darwin, who had exceptional children.

Fact: Franklin D. Roosevelt, the longest serving US president in history married his cousin (not a first cousin, however they shared the same last name).

Fact: The first Prime Minister of Canada, Sir John A. MacDonald married his first cousin.

Fact: Leviticus 18 lists all forbidden sexual relationships. Cousin relationships are not included.

Fact: God commanded many cousins to marry, including Zelophehad's 5 daughters, Eleazar's daughters, Jacob (who married both Rachel and Leah, first cousins), and Isaac and Rebekkah (first cousins once removed). All were ancestors of Jesus Christ.

Fact: Current studies indicate that cousin couples have a lower ratio of miscarriages -- perhaps because body chemistry of cousins is more similar. The verdict is still out.

Re: # 101

Hamidm2 miaN, there you go again - spreading your usual foolish nonsenseyou’re your meaningless verbiage pretending to be argument but in reality little more than merely disguised prejudice for that old racial superiority complex which seems to be a biraasat of all Pakistanis - not to mention their sole source of comfort - otherwise, after all, they would be confronted with the difficult-to-answer question of “what was the point in breaking up in the first place”!

First, the game of basketball is played and won by people who are taller than their opponents. Amrikkans, including black Amrikkans, are generally taller than Indians (and taller than those West Indians who mistakenly call themselves "Pakistanis"). So, that explains why there are more Black Amrikkans and fewer Madrasis in the NBA. The Indian children (both in the USA and in India) are now growing to be taller than their parents, so it is only a matter of time before you will see such Madrasis reflected in the NBA pool. Remember, currently there is only 1.5 percent of the US population which is desi. Give it time to grow.

Second, the NBA is already closer to the Indians than you realize, and it is getting closer. The NBA has plans to set up camps and recruit in India. Check out the URL http://www.lebasketbawl.com/2008/01/nba-heading-to-india.html

Re: # 87

Ahmedmadani sahib, it is a sad fact of life that trying to look “white” is a trait that even some Indians are following now-a-days. It is evident from the sales figures of facial bleaches and the increasing popularity of the European (mostly East European) models and actresses in Bollywood.

As far as Pakistan is concerned, it is fair to say that racism was and is at the very core of the thought process that led to the formation of that country – and later to the breaking away of the “darker” Bengalis.

I realize that these are my own opinions but unfortunately, there is a lot of truth behind the same. I have a feeling that even here – in the chowk world – the women spend a lot of time doing lippa-poti of their thobras!

Life is so “unfair”!

Author, kindly desist from making personal remarks regarding individual interactors. It violates all known (and the secret) guidelines of the chowk samudai.

In any case, the shamelessness of SOME Pakistanis at usurpation is very evident!

Re: # 93

Ahmedmadani sahib, these are very fundamental questions and I am absolutely sure that a Nobel prize awaits the scholar (preferably, some bright Pakistani scholar) who can come up with a satisfactory answer.

Perhaps Mantolives is already working on demystifying the same.

Kulharee, I notice you have come up with another one of your…. muddle-headed, take this and that, mish-mash left and right, throw in the seasoning of a lot of highly subjective comments, link all together with a bunch of loose sweeping statements and call it a sports article by dropping in the name of Jackie Robinson (because the chowk insaans are too bhola-bhala to distinguish Jackie Robinson from Jackie Gleason) - a piece which does not know where it starts or where it ends or where it should have ended (right at the beginning) and post it to chowk because those no-name, no-good “editors” will print anything which comes their way because they are too busy to actually read anything, not to mention that they are even more busy and even more too dumb to correct the typos… article!
