The "emerging" business class will clash with the army for resources, no question about that. However, this is only a short term clash. Eventually, this class will require "resource mobilization" (to be subsidized) through a strong state. A state that can mobilize the required resources through adequate coercion on one hand and "Pakistan Shining" kind of propoganda through its middle class knaves. Such a state apparatus requires time to set up. At present the army is the only institution that can provide such a state at a high level of effectiveness. Once this realization seeps through after the present on-going drama, things will revert to the same with a little bit of cosmetic change. Maybe the dictator will leave and the "judiciary" will be "restored". Some kind of resource sharing will be worked out (will evolve) between the army and the emerging "business class", perhaps subsidized adequately by the US. The wild card in all this will, of course, be the lawyers/students movement and the Lal Masjid Party.

I was browsing over HP's comments and #119 was preceeded by your #118 where you write:
"... (it assumed too much knowledge to be able to read between the lines effectively) but your interacts have been vintage HP. Great job."
In #175, I use similar words though not the same thoughts! Boy!!!

Recently, I had set forth a bunch of hypotheses on the "middle class" etc. on a different board (I forget which). It would be nice to get your feedback on that. Let me see if I can find it. And if it is OK with you, I can re-post it here.

Bravo! You are getting back to your vintage self. For the first time the economics behind the political dynamics has been put forth in chowk ... i.e. the forest instead of the trees is being carefully considered. Moreover, the hypothesis is put forth in a simple manner that is easy to understand. I hope you will not stop this series. The reason has to do with the last few paragraphs. Too much is being said for a person without prior knowledge. It would be nice if you deal with it a bit more in detail in the next article :)
Very well written and a treat. Now on to the interacts ....

If everything else were to remain the same (ceteris paribus) and if I, GT, could decide on the fate of Kashmir, I would be more than happy to let Kasmiris be free or join Uzbekistan and take their real estate with them.
But things won't remain the same. The Biharis would start killing Muslim Biharis (who I agree wash more often than the Hindu Biharis do, as stated not only by Raj but also by the great Bal - you do not need to know who these guys are). Arjun tip-top, and his types, will let loose his four and five star generals on Hinglish newspapers in India to accurately translate the term "akhand-bharat". Jayalalitha (again you need not know who she or it is) will design the nookhleer sthrategy which will get rid of all Aryans and keep the Dravidians safe, in the process she will get her lover Some-wati elected as the next PM of India. Mayawati will join the Naxals in buying prime property in Srinagar so that they can jointly come to power in Kashmir, no matter what its affiliation is. So you see there are a lot of things that will change.
None of the above changes bother me. What bothers me is that Mohar will disentangle all this chaos, (i) speculate correctly in the Bombay stock exchange; (ii) become a millionaire; (iii) buy chowk from Ginni; and (iv) ban Masadi. This bothers me and I shall never let that happen. So I am willing to kill as many Kashmiris as need be and rape as many as I can given the bhindi (you need not know what this is).

The unwashed in Pakistan, like their brothers in India, have a tough life. I would go ahead and guess that they feel "oppressed". Yet, they are able to survive and feel that their children can too. This, for them, is something that they cannot give up. So, though they would like to become better off they would not like to risk survival. The risk comes from the fact that the socio-economic structure has evolved to benifit a few. These few, in turn, have designed a power structure to make the status-quo persist. The power-structure (both religious and martial) would release its dogs of war (i.e. its pimps, pykes, professors and pastors - the middle class thugs) on anyone who tries to change the structure. The unwashed know this and do not want to risk their survival. Not being sure of who is their friend and who is their enemy they would of course adopt the optimal strategy of silence.
In this context, we see both in India and Pakistan, elements of certain sections of the disgruntled middle class being able to seduce small groups of unwashed and organize them into militias. These militias are then used to fight the organized and unorganized, or if you may formal and informal, militias of those who control power (i.e. the state).
The bulk of the unwashed, of course, are indifferent. They cannot be worse off with either side winning. In regions where dysentry accounts for thousands of un-recognized deaths why shout against a few more deaths caused by pipe bombs (albeit now, in the age of high technology, these pipes are filled with RDX instead of the previous soapy gu and detonated by remote controlled signals).
Another sizeable section of the middle class is worried though. The reality of death seems to be approaching closer. Dreams of "growth", BMWs, etc. are receeding or at least threatened. They are the ones for whom the "risk" is worth taking. They are educated, intelligent and far sighted. They should know that the "risk" is best taken by getting the unwashed on their "side". For this though, they have to realize that they have to share in the potential gains. The good news is that "electoral democracy" is just about forcing Indians to go down this path. I believe that the Lawyers/students movement will do the same for Pakistanis.

Without knowing, or having a feel of, the pulse of the unwashed in Pakistan let me put forth the following hypothesis. The unwashed in Pakistan, like their brothers in India, have a tough life. I believe you and have reasons to do so. You may be sad to know that the Dargah is in a bad state. Though, a lot of people vistit the Dargah and hold it in high esteem there is a lot of infighting amongst the members of the committee and money is diverted for other purposes.

First, to your question on the other board. Wild life has vanished from Agra/Fatehpur Sikri except for monkeys and neel-gais. Quails, and pheasants, one can still find. However, one can find a lot of game extending from the ravines north of Mathura right upto the Terai. Hunting is banned everywhere in this region, except for parts in Terai. Hunting certain species is banned everywhere.
Second, you say:
"Why would the armed forces help the same militants which they are targeting."
1. Instead of thinking militants think different "militias" and you should find your answer. The Indian govt. uses this method in Assam and Kashmir and are now trying to do so in the Naxal belt. Has not resulted in any success, but has lead to a lot of misery for the common folks.
2. I believe you knew the answer before asking the question. I know that police chapies are smart ... but sometimes you guys underestimate the intelligence of the unwashed.
