How real is your politik?
Posted by Nebukadresar Aug 27, 2008 11:26 am
#62 Posted by HP,

It was on 14th Street off Kh-e-Mujahid, between Agha Siraj and Arshad Mehmood (the ex-Director Finace PIA).

Anything else?

I agree except the ZAB part, over which we have debated before. ZAB had a plan, Benazir never did, and Zardari - forget it.

Yes only economy produces jobs, nothing else.

... and yes amongst cronies I missed the biggest one, Agha Siraj Durrani. He's actually the one who delivered PPP to Asif Zardari - and has been amply rewarded. He was my next door neighbor till a few years ago on 14th St, Khayaban-e-Mujahid.

I know all these guys.

#52 Posted by tahmed32,

I beg to differ - the "Bhutto" name has traditionally meant nothing outside larkana, nor does it have any deep-seated legacy ...

Oh tahmed Sahib, then I'm afraid you don't really know PPP. The slogan "Roti, Kapra, aur Makaan" is what drives PPP, has always driven, and is still the slogan - despite the fact that PPP is no more a social-democratic agenda party. AND this slogan is synonymous with the Bhutto name. It means 'jobs'.

Now who wouldn't vote for that? That was the 'Bhutto' promise. PPP can't provide jobs but it's voters don't know that. They just vote for a Bhutto.

The 'Will' was a brilliant tactic. You need a Bhutto? Okay you got one. Bilawal Zardari - Bhutto, Benazir's son, who doesn't even know what's happening and is chatting on Facebook and clowning in college parties.

So who'll run the party? Wait, Benazir also said the 'Co-Chairman' should be Zardari PROVIDED that the party Central Executive Committee has no objection.

And who's the Central Executive Committee? One which seldom even meets, and is mostly composed of cronies like Zulfiqar Mirza (The Sindh Interior Minister of Sakrand Sugar Mills fame, and his wife Fehmida Mirza (the Speaker NA).

The one who DID have objections was sidelined - Amin Fahim, like a fly out of soup. The other one, Aitezaz Ahsan, under house arrest, and too loyal a PPP person to object anyway.

See tahmed Sahib?

No I didn't miss the point but failed to comment on it. You see PPP leadership had no choice in the Bhutto family. If they had one, they would not have accepted the 'Will'.

You do understand that PPP IS Bhutto Jageer. It's nothing without a Bhutto at the helm. The Bhutto name is the mass appeal of the party and none other. Why do you think Zardari needed to change Bilawal's name?

The 'real' Bhuttos i.e. Sanam Bhutto was offered but refused, Mumtaz Bhutto was not in PPP, Fatima and Zulfiqar Jr or their cousins (Shanawaz's kids) are not in politics, and the choice was between Ghinwa and Zardari. Ghinwa is no Bhutto either, not even a Sindhi nor even Pakistani, and the sympathy wave had to be capitalized upon, so actually no choice.

I think it's only a matter of time that one of the above makes a comeback and Zardari will be out in no time at all. Mumtaz Bhutto is working on it. Remember Sassui Bhutto's visit from France?

The 'Will' is a key document which will definitely be brought into question. There is no evidence Benazir would have written it, and plenty of evidence that she would not.

Consider that (1) Zardari's corruption was responsible for dismissal of Benazir's second term (that was the main charge read out in the dismissal speech by the President) and most of PPP leadership was opposed to Zardari for that reason alone. (2) Zardari had bought Rockwood Estate for his second wife (? Hyat) who regularly met him during incarceration and was forced to divorce by Benazir after Rockwood scandal broke and (3) Benazir and Zardari had been practically separated with him living in New York after release and she in London/Dubai - throughout the period till she was killed.

Now is there any reason to believe she would give him PPP in her Will?

There is a very large group in PPP which believes the 'Will' is fake. I know a Punjab PPP progressive (a journalist) who's a member of the Central Executive Committee who says Zardari cooked it up. I think Amin Fahim doesn't believe the Will too.
