Dash, the problem is, quite apart from the blackmail component (which is quite clearly there) there is the reality as rf786 pointed out that the only realistic option is to work with the civilian government. It's a miserable situation all around, I agree.

minor correction: it was a Hamid Mir column (only source), and it was an "unnamed senior army official", not the army spokesperson!

[What surprises me the most that the great sufis who were supposed to create Muslim-Hindu understanding and 'joint culture' (according to Hindu liberals) did not explain any of this to their Muslim followers]
yeah, because you're wrong. it's obviously not the same thing that your grandmother doesn't let you into the kitchen unless you've showered and if she doesn't let an impure muslim into her kitchen ever.

thanks for revealing your true face and that of your pathetic compatriots like Faruk here. Not that we didn't know this, but now we can safely ignore you next time you whine on and on about Jinnah the evil communalist -- anyone who talks about the citizens of his own country like this hasn't the slightest right to judge the morality of separatist movements.

sattar2: here's a question. Isn't it perfectly natural for those with faith to defend their faith with the claim of rationality? otherwise they wouldn't really have faith, would they :)

[Keep this up, you will make it impossible for a Muslim to ever be in US politics. No skin off my nose.]
I don't want to keep fighting, so in all seriousness: there are lots of issue with north american muslim organizations. I spent a lot of time in college reading danielpipes.org, and so while I have a lot of good friends who were active in MSA, ISNA, CAIR, etc, I would not be surprised if their ties to these organizations came under scrutiny if they were ever appointed to a political office. Anyway, MSA membership in college is one thing, and being in a leadership position in Jamat-e-Islami USA (which doesn't exist, but just hypoethically) even for humanitarian work at the age of 33 is an entirely different matter. I am 100% sure that someone like that would have absolutely no chance at political office here and I would be the last person to be defending them.

nb: I guess you should go fix the wikipedia article about the Bajrang Dal which says that it's the youth wing of the VHP.

nb: If you notice there were two parts to my post #33. The second part (which you are referring to) was addressed to another commenter, not you. I did answer your question, I said the press usually asks questions about these things and the onus is on the person being vetted to answer them in a way that is sufficiently satisfactory way for the public -- if they want their political career to survive. In any case, this whole point is moot because I've been reading more about Vijay Prashad's claims and pretty much everything he said about her was on the public record.
I guess you can compare the Edhi foundation to the VHP if you want, but despite Edhi's occasional outbursts of stupidity against "zionists" he hasn't ever engineered riots or has his own violent youth militia so the comparison is kind of stupid. By the way, a better comparison to the situation is if Edhi were ever appointed to political office in the US. He would probably be vetted and some of his more silly statements about the zionists would probably prevent him from being appointed. That's just politics.

I actually have no problem with Sonal Shah's links with VHP. That would be a little ridiculous considering some of the war criminals serving in the current US cabinet. I was only arguing that those defending her appointment should present better arguments than "Why should she have to justify everything because she is an Indian Hindu woman?" which is just dishonest.

when political associations are called into question by the press, the onus is on the person in question to clarify them to the public and so far this hasn't really been done. An easy way out is to start whining about victimhood, guilt by association, etc.
#29:
See, it's up to you. You don't consider a VHP-A association to be a big deal. So be honest, and admit this. Somehow I doubt your reaction to a similar appointment of someone with JI links would be to make a donation to the US chapter of JI.

by the way, can you clarify what do you see as "mindless slander"? The fact that her membership in VHP-A is being made a big deal or that the accusation itself is false?
