Raincoat

Have grown fond of the roles Ajay Devgan’s begun to take. Totally different from the annoying role of his first movie.

Recently an Indian friend commented on how I remind him of Bengalis. Though he may have had a hint of mockery in that comment, my immediate reaction was one of surprised pride. Because for some inexplicable reason, I am enamoured to Bengalis.

Raincoat, set in Kolkata, captures that depth of loss in human emotions. Where emotions are always in struggle with materialism and material goals. And where the two main characters, Ajay and Aishwaria do’nt want to suggest their weaknesses and losses in the struggle. Between them, the loss goes unsaid. But the movie rises beyond the ’the neckless’ twists. It is the other loss that is finally acknowledged once again. Like many great Bengali movies, it leaves with a conclusion that is depressing but one which is also slightly fulfilling albeit not uplifting.
