Plasticized Mytho-Poetical Love-Fest :
2046 -
directed by Mr. Wai Kar-Wong

Wong Kar-Wai’s work spans a decade and with 2046, he has delivered his magnum-opus. 2046’s very first frame on the screen heralds a new era in Cinema. The saturation of images, deliberately mistimed improvs, discovered ruptures of smoldering passions within those images that beget connections and characters even entire movies within movies lead to a shockingly new way of imagining the world through sliding - a fundamentally original vision of echo-narration that self-refer and retains self-similarity within images, scenes, sequences even between Wai’s movies.

(Close Second)

Memories of Love that Becomes and Transcends in

The New World
directed by Terence Malick.

Malick’s new movie is a sight to behold on a big screen right from the very first scene that was magnificently modulated on Wagner’s Das Rheingold. The narrative-eye comples the viewer to see the pastures around Virginia coastline as if being seen (imagined) for the very first time. Malick provides a visual space in which we see a hypnotic, synthetic reality that is rooted in the characters’ imaginations. We see a narrative back and forth that at times turn into a somber poetic avoidance from the cruelties of the actual, the Real. The New World turns out to be a life-altering experience and had it not been for 2046 - this film would definitely be my pick for the best movie of 2005.

faizan! thank you, thank you for telling me that they were available at rainbow center. I ’ve been telling this to my cousin for so long. Now, i got the evidence to kick his butt some more.

you need to check his other movies too specially ’’happy together’’. After watching ’’in the mood for love’’, you will be just blown away by 2046. I can’t hype this enough.

I agree with Raw_Dust on this. I’ve actually managed to pick up Worg Kar’s poetic works ’In the mood for love’ and ’Chungking Express’ as DVD’s both from the highly resourceful Rainbow centre. All you need to do is look around a bit.

che: wong kar wai’s stuff is not indie.. he is a major hongkong studio guy ... i figure, if karachi vcd/dvd market could get loads of hongkong b-action flicks then a little coaxing (paan-chai) might get you kar-wai’s work thru the same channel.. you should do work on the dealers sitting in the rainbow center.. kar-wai is a necessity..

cheers!

Wong Kaw-Wai Alert
WKW is going to direct Norah Jones as the lead in his new film. The cast is stellar with natalie portman, ed harris, kevin spacey, jude law, rachel weisz and a few dozen more

i signed that netflixsettlement statement awhile back... i dunno wat happened after that... except the service has gone bad as i suppose, now they can deliberately cut you off if they want to for too many rentals...

#9
this supposed to be cronenberg’s most mainstream movie to date... i am waiting for the dvd to come out.. the cast is pretty good too besides...

i think, asian filmmakers(i.e. east asians) are doing reallly out there things.. like the stuff put out by kar-wai and tsai ming liang, hsiau hou etc. they have developed very distinct styles that at the same time is connected to half-baked french ides of the 60s (specially in the case of wai, liang) and yet seem completely new...

I liked 2046, but not as much as I liked A History of Violence.
