my 2 cents: I AM LEGEND

Topic started by hurricane on Dec 15, 2007 11:10:30 pm

I am too, in my own mind.

But this quasi-review (actually a smattering of thoughts), is about the movie I AM LEGEND starring Will Smith and directed by the same guy who brought you CONSTANTINE and the Britney Spears semi-pornish fetish video "I'm a Slave for you", the director Francis Lawrence.

First off, there are no spoilers in this 2 cent-er, so read without worries.

I have not read the book, but I am told that it was quite different. In fact I loved the premise of the book so much that I was really eager to see that reflected here. Alas, this is hollywood and good guys are generally good.

So the movie opens with: A cure for cancer! There is a doctor that has modified the measels virus to deliver the cure for cancer. Only, it does not unfold as planned and the virus becomes deadly, and gets airborne. Boom. Just like that the population of the earth is obliterated.

Except one man.

And as the tag line of the movies says, unfortunately, "the last man on earth is not alone".

Nope. See quite a few of the people that did not die instantly (5.4 billion people died instantly), become zombie creatures that are unable to step into the light. But at night, the land is thiers.

Our man, Will Smith, is trying to find a cure for this disease (still), and living the terrified life of being alone and surrounded by these creatures.

Will he find the cure in time to save himself and what remains of humanity?

That you will have to go to the theaters to find out.

Now for my 2 extra cents:

cent 1: DON CHEADLE would have totally made this movie solid gold. Will Smith is good, but he ain't no Don Cheadle. Our man from Hotel Rawanda. However, Will Smith is a MOVIE STAR. So it was the right decision by the studios to cast him.

cent 2: See the director couldn't shake some of the tackiness that he brought forth as luggage from Constantine. However, the movie is so engrossing that you will not be dismayed by the corniness when it does appear.

trivia: To show the deserted New York scenes, the movie folks spent $50 MILLION bucks in special effects to nail down some of those scenes. I believe it is about 10 minutes worth of film, that they spent $50 million on...but hey, it is hollywood. Money is no matter.

So there you have it folks. Go see it. Well worth it (T)

Addendum:

I just went and purchased the book I AM LEGEND.

DAMN!!!! It is also really great. Significantly different from the movie. That is well worth it too. I am going to highly recommend the book (I am only halfway through, but it is riveting).

I forgot to mention that in 1971, THE OMEGA MAN, starring Charlton Heston and directed by Boris Sagal , was about the same story. I haven't seen that yet. I will watch and let you know.
