Real or anonymous?

Topic started by zeemax on Jan 27, 2008 5:16:10 am

In internet forums, we tend to forget that there's a real person on the other end. Some things we say on anonymous forums, actually changes the entire mindsets of people on the receiving end ... and in turn they have their own, no matter how small, areas of influence, and it snowballs from there.

Internet forums are now a very very powerful medium of expression. If we were to keep these interactions positive, our typing on these keyboards can actually form or destroy positive attitudes.

For each individual interactor, we can easily multiply them with about a thousand silent observers who read Chowk everyday.

Whenever I post, I do not have my addressee in mind. I have those thousands of silent observers in mind who will read it.

Dash_Dot,

Usenet was full of mad geniuses, and really idiosyncratic characters. It was a true community. I haven't seen a single hate mongering thread there. People were actually so helpful that it was unbelievable. If you needed a rare piece of music, or a license key for any software etc, someone would get it for you. I learnt hacking there from an accomplished hacker who could remotely shut down my machine or get my desktop image or steal my e-mail much much before this sort of thing became commonplace with software like NetBus etc.

Dash_Dot I saw your thread on off the wall. If you open it here I will certainly reply to your question.

actually zeemax USENET became that only after the riff-raff were allowed in.

I was there when the likes of SCI/SCP were set up. ANd was also a witness to the break up of SCP into smaller categories - personality clashes - followed by the Bhonk of Ragistan.

Infact before the general mass turned up - you could do anon posts using anon.penet.fi and it worked well.

The thing to remember is that DEMOCRATISATION ALWAYS LEADS to the LCD situation int he first instance. The real thing is how you manage it from there(T)

... to clarify further ... I have been on the internet since there was no world wide web i.e. WWW which we now know as 'internet'. At that time there was a very cumbersome 'internet' called the 'Usenet'. It was technical to get in there and it was not free. I suppose it's still bigger than WWW though I haven't checked. It is quite incredible. Total anarchy.

Then came ICQ .... that was the milestone. Then Java chats (I knew scout on such a chat when her nick was ekbanda). Then came Yahoo chat and MSN IM's which killed ICQ. Now there're forums like facebook (homeland security), Orkut, and small forums like Chowk. These are not as anarchic as the Usenet, but still pretty influential.

Anyhow, I'm qualified to comment on cyber relationships. These are actually more real than cyber.

Post by nb,

Yes nb. I was very sad to see an unbiased person like you reacting and turning into something which you definitely are not.

On a personal level, I have seen internet chats turning into serious acrimony, enmity, divorces, and actually one particular female friend who left her husband and three teenage daughters in Johannesburg, S. Africa, running off to Israel to marry someone she had met on ICQ who was lying all the time.

Internet and instant messaging is very serious business.

I wish people would realize there's a real person on the other end, and when his/hers ethnicity/complexion/physical appearance/religious persuasion etc is ridiculed, it doesn't get laughed off as just an 'internet forum'. Real opinions are formed through these interactions, and very real hurts and very real personal problems caused.

One must display responsibilty in anonymous interactions.

Harmless nok jhonk aside of-course.
