Benazir whodunnit and the mystery of the missing Dupata!

Topic started by zeemax on Feb 13, 2008 10:54:35 pm

Excerpts from the Dawn report:

RAWALPINDI, Feb 13: A five-man group was involved in the assassination of PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto, but their link with militant commander Baitullah Mehsud has not been established, Chaudhry Abdul Majid, the Additional Inspector General of CID who is heading the government’s investigation into the assassination, told a press conference on Wednesday.

He said of the five, two had been captured, the man who fired shots later blew himself up and the fourth, another suicide bomber who was at the other end of Liaquat Bagh, escaped. He was waiting to strike if the first shooter failed. The “handler” is yet be traced.

It was the second press conference by Chaudhry Majid on Ms Bhutto’s assassination, but the question who was behind the plot remained unanswered.

“The planning of the Dec 27 assassination of Ms Bhutto was made by the group in Nov 2007,” he said, adding: “Their link with militant commander Baitullah Mehsud has not been established so far.”

He said that there had been five people present in the vicinity of Liaquat Bagh and it was Saeed who fired shots and later blew himself up.Answering a question, Mr Majeed said the investigators had not been able to find Ms Bhutto’s “dupata” she was wearing at the time.

He said that during the interrogation, the accused said that they were angry over Ms Bhutto’s pro-West attitude and they were afraid of strong action against them if she came to power.

So, now we see that:

- Baitullah Mehsud's connection is not clear ("but their link with militant commander Baitullah Mehsud has not been established";) but thought they had the connection all wrapped up with that taped conversation?

- The group of five were angry over pro-west attitude of Bhutto (elsewhere it's reported their relatives were killed in Lal Masjid) so then it was an individual act?

- And where's that frikkin' Dupata? The hole in that Dupata would prove beyond doubt what it was that made a hole in her skull. So where is it :?:?:?

Post by majumdar,

Wud it really matter as to whether waht was the mode of assassination.

I'm surprised many people raise this question including our friend kaiser, when the implication is clear.

Would it lead to the killers or not if it was established whether she was hurled on the escape hatch lever through force of the blast after the shots by the same assassin meaning an individual act, or by two separate assassins meaning a wider organisation? or by a sniper and a shooter and a bomber meaning an elaborate covert operation with governmental involvement?

Re the ambassador, no news yet. It's probably an abduction for ransom and not to exchange Mansoor Dadullah as was earlier speculated. Dadullah had been expelled by Taliban for insubordination and they wouldn't have bothered about him.

Zee sahib,

Wud it really matter as to whether waht was the mode of assassination. How relevant it is to find the true assassin from the forensic POV.

Unrelated but what's up with the Ambassador to A'stan.

Regards
