Yes, I've heard the songs from Out of Season and I like all of them. They are fabulous. It's not just a lounge act, there are strains there of the old celtic songstresses like "Candy Says"..... She's really fabulous.

Yamet mamo is not very well known and I was rather captivated by one song that she sang in the British film, "Death at a funeral". I wonder if you've seen it. It's funny.

That song reminded me a lot of Paul Desmond's sax playing and there was one song by Portishead that triggered the same reflections.

Here is Yamit Mamo's facebook site.

how about a one or two names for bhavgeeta vocalists (am assuming in hindustani music tradition)... ?

i'm waiting for this translation to come out in Nov. this cover of the original is a bit melodramatic

[[that was actually by me.. was trying to rip off Nabokov :S

i'm listening to that non-pop celtic video... oh and by the way do you own a copy of the gregorian chants? :)]]

Hehe, actually I do so you weren't far wrong in your paragraph. I also used to have a recorded version of Hildegarde of Bingen sung by Noirin NiRiain... But I must confess that I rather like listening to the more complicated (musically) versions of Faure and Mozart etc.. Even the bauls, bhavgeeta, qawwalis etc of our own folks are wonderful. Even my much more than me atheist spouse is impressed with the devotion.

That cartoon was hilarious.

This Pankaj Mishra person... He was the chap who was it seemed then instrumental in getting Arundhati Roy's book to the masses. He was working in Penguin India at one time....

Many years ago my wife had reviewed his 'Butter chicken in Ludhiana". Some folks liked it I thought it was a book writtnen by a pretentious preppie with good connections... Very brown sahib like....

I wonder if he has come on since then..

Raw_Dust and Che

A sample of the celtic non pop stuff. I like this singer a lot . Noirin NiRiain (would be Noreen O'Ryan in England/US)

dunno where.. but enya is definitely there.

i am assuming swarrier is like a character in a book.. something like..

he would sit in his library most of the days, for that's what his chief-occupation requires of him, belaboring his words to come out of his pen one by one, brought forth in waves after waves of caesural ecstasy and occasionally there would rise songs of pure devotion (he'd be listening to the Gregorian Chants) that would turn the magic on the upright spines of thousands in attendance: palimpsests, books, records, into a rapturous choir. :(W)

interesting.. i know nothing about old celtic music (well, except its pop bastardization in the shape of Enya.. yuckh). Beth Gibbons' voice reminded me of Edith Piaf's (too obvious not to say)

I'll check out Yamit Mamo.. thanks.
