$ 50 for fruit juices, multi-grain bread, oatmeals for kids, fresh fruit etc are the same as Rs. 50 for one meal worth of atta and cheeni and ghee?

... should be:

$ 50 for fruit juices, multi-grain bread, oatmeals for kids, fresh fruit etc for scout's half-week are the same as Rs. 50 for one meal worth of atta and cheeni and ghee?

Sheru1849,

The answer below was just for your "is it 200 rs min a day or 100?"

I don't know what the hell are you talking about in the rest of your post ... Are you saying $ 50 for fruit juices, multi-grain bread, oatmeals for kids, fresh fruit etc are the same as Rs. 50 for one meal worth of atta and cheeni and ghee?

Sheru1849,

Read below which is reproduced from this same page addressed to you. You didn't even read it.

Minimum-wage is $5.85 per hour in USA. Multiply that with 10 working hours per day. That's $58.50 or say $60 per day in USA. I.e. the poorest daily wager can buy half a week's groceries in less than a day's wages if it's what this inflatable doll says it costs and is making a randi rona about it.

Pakistan's minimum monthly wage is Rs. 6,000 per month (no hourly). Bring it to hourly for comparison by dividing by 25 working days and dividing by 24 and multiply by 10. That's Rs. 100 per day.

zeemax, there is a built in assumption that the poorest person in US still have access to cleaner grocery store, better food and many other amenities that pakistani poor even if he(pakistani) earns twice of the minimum wage. there are certainly intangible benefits of living in america that are absent in india.

is it 200 rs min a day or 100?

first, scout's $50 grocery is for half a week. that makes 50 x 2 x 4= $400 a month for a 4 week month. they are 2 people in the house plus they eat out a lot. I bet their monthly eating expense is around $800 or more. I know ours is and we are 2 people too.

secondly, if we want item to item the same in groceries for a common person in US and Pakistan, then of course both are going to cost the same..you have to make adjustments for PPI, branding, quality of products other social norms. BUT if you want same quality, same brands, same food it will cost more in Pakistan than in US...I think thats what you are saying. I wrote about this couple of years ago after a visit to india that india is much more expansive if you want quality items comparable to that you use in US. there is no argument about there.

india basics

chawal rs 20 kilo
chicken (i think) rs 100 kilo
mutton rs 180
onion rs 8-10
tamatar rs 15
milk 26
eggs 30 per dozen?

so sure...you can easily buy a days grocery in rs 100 for a family if they are veggie

zeeamx, I think $50 per day (after SS, medicare taxes etc..no income taxes) versus 200 rupees in India or pakistan is pretty much equivalent.

with inflation rates of 10% in india and 20%+ in pakiland, I don't think so...

Sheru1849,

What you're saying is even worse than the randi rona of this inflatable doll. What you're saying is "$50 per day (after SS, medicare taxes etc..no income taxes) versus 200 rupees in India or pakistan is pretty much equivalent.".

Exclude social security and Medicare because there's none in Pakistan. That's Rs. 100 a day in Pakistan which doesn't even buy half a day's basic groceries and $ 50 in USA (after SS, medicare taxes etc..no income taxes as you say) which buys half of a week groceries for even coffee party type inflatable dolls. And they're both equivalent.

Is that what you're saying?

zeeamx, I think $50 per day (after SS, medicare taxes etc..no income taxes) versus 200 rupees in India or pakistan is pretty much equivalent. Both are very low wages for a family of say 4 or 5. Both families will be living in abject poverty but 200 rupees in Pakistan still go much farther than $50 in US. let us not think how you or I would spend that 200 rupees or $50. we will probably spend it and some more on lunch but peopel lviing on 200 rupees day will use it much wisely and resourcefully than we can even think about.

Can she buy a single days groceries in Rs 100 let alone half a week? And I'm talking about the poor, not inflatable coffee party type aunties with their randi rona.

Like I said, randi rona is right.

Yep,

Inflation is hitting hard. However, instead of blaming India (Bush did it) is wrong. Indians are still undernourished as a nation compared to obese and chootya americans, who say that commodity inflation is due to indians prospering and eating more...
