Farzana Versey

It has been a long journey where destinations have been opened suitcases with strewn clothes, unwashed undergarments, perfumed stoles. Yes, this is a metaphor for my work. I write only when I feel strongly about something; thinking follows. As it does with any emotion. I am aware that this has made me open to more criticism, but it has also got me closer to many people. When the wounds/warts are open, you do touch a raw nerve. That is the only way I know to live and write.

A resume is pretty useless for one who tears into every new column or article or poem like a thirsty minstrel in a desert. Forget about whether my voice will reach out to anyone, I am not even sure I can sing with a parched throat. But I do believe in oases. Which is why I remain a traveler…yes, I have written columns, features, interviews for many publications, I have taught the visually-impaired, worked among the children in red-light areas, and these have given me a sense of loss as well as hope.

Serendipity has a played a major role in whatever I have done, and I admit I have not been terribly ambitious in my career aspirations. This does give the impression of being elitist. The fear of being co-opted by the herd, however committed it be, is palpable. And then, I do like the good things of life too. But, even as a ‘Cadillac Communist”, I haven’t taken anyone for a ride, have I?

If you occasionally walk with me, you will realise that the truth I speak of is not too far from the one you see.

Every illegal religious shrine ought to be demolished. Yet, I wish to know how a 200-year-old dargah of a Sufi saint qualifies as being ‘illegal’, is bulldozed and leads to mob violence. Gujarat is becoming an experimental lab for the Hindu Ra
